Lawyer cries foul over search and trail

BANGKOK: -- Lawyer of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra today called the search of her motorcade and the monitoring of her movement an infringement of her right and liberty and also a violation of her privacy.

The lawyer, Norawit Laleng, said such violation by police and soldiers should stop now as it was tantamount to putting her in custody.

He recalled the incident last Tuesday in Chiang Mai while she was travelling in a motorcade from her home to pay homage to her ancestors at Wat Rongtham Samakkhi temple cemetery in San Kamphaeng district.

Soldiers from the Third Army Region and police stopped her motorcade for a search. However the former premier gave cooperation in the search to show her sincerity, he said.

But after the incident she again was followed by police and soldiers wherever she went in Chiang Mai.

Besides, the night before, a military vehicle with soldiers also parked in front of the housing estate in Mae Rim district where she was staying, he said.

This was an indirect following of her movement and was tantamount to keep her under custody and was an infringement of her privacy, and deprived her of right and liberty.

The lawyer said if this practise was a matter of security measures provided for a VIP as claimed by some senior security officials, she should be notified beforehand, he said.

He went on saying that the former prime minister has abided by orders and conditions laid down by the military junta whether in the country or abroad and never created any trouble.

He then called that the police and the military stop infringing on her right and liberty and respect her privacy protected by the constitution.

Yingluck's Lawyer Urges Junta to Stop Intimidating Her

BANGKOK — Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's lawyer has asked the Thai military to stop trailing the former leader, which he called an infringement of her rights to privacy and freedom of movement.

The lawyer, Norawich Lalaeng, was referring to the soldiers who stopped and searched Yingluck’s convoy in Chiang Mai province yesterday and followed her for the rest of the day to a temple and market. While the military insisted that the soldiers were merely providing security, Norawich said Yingluck never requested the "protection," and felt threatened by the gesture.

"The police officers and soldiers followed her all day. Even at night, soldiers were posted around her residence," Norawich told Khaosod today. "Such action may not have been a direct attempt to detain her, but it could be seen as indirect detention. It infringes on her privacy, and it restricts her individual rights and freedom. If security forces want to provide us with VIP protection like they said in the news, they should coordinate with us directly, so both sides will be relieved."

Stop undermining Yingluck’s freedom: Ex-PM's Lawyer
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 11 -- The lawyer for former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has urged the military to stop threatening rights of the former premier, pointing out that she should be allowed to travel overseas because a formal indictment against her over the controversial rice-pledging scheme has not been brought to court.

Norawit Lalang said today that Yingluck has cooperated and strictly complied with orders of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) since the May 22 military takeover and the nationwide declaration of martial law.

Whether she is in Thailand or overseas, his client has never done anything that would lead to unrest in the country, he said.

Sources said that the NCPO has already rejected a request by the former premier to visit Hong Kong, China and the UK from February 10-22, reasoning that she must attend a court trial.

Mr Norawit said the Attorney-General has announced that it would take about a month to draft an indictment against Yingluck and the lawsuit should be formally launched with the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions within March.

Ms Yingluck understands that she should have the right to take the overseas trip from February 10-22, he said.

“The Office of Attorney General (OAG) has already said that it has no power to prevent an individual from taking an oversea trip unless an indictment against the defendant has been brought to a court, “ he said.

“I am asking the concerned authorities to stop undermining rights and freedom of the former prime minister that she is entitled to under the constitution and legal procedure,” he said.

On the military’s close monitoring on Ms Yingluck, Mr Norawit said it undermines and restricts her personal rights and freedom.

Ms Yingluck’s van was closely followed by security officials and her motorcade was reportedly stopped and searched at a checkpoint yesterday when she was in the northern of province of Chiang Mai to join a merit-making rite for her ancestors.

“This is like Ms Yingluck is indirectly detained,” Mr Norawit said

He said if the army considers Ms Yingluck as a ‘VIP’ figure and wants to ensure her safety, it could directly contact and inform her. (MCOT online news)

I guess it's a small improvement on threatening her children like last time.

Classless Junta.

Pray tell me more. Did the junta with it's army threaten the one and only son Ms. Yingluck has or does Ms. Yigluck have more kids than we were always told about ?

"He then called that the police and the military stop infringing on her right and liberty and respect her privacy protected by the constitution."

Perhaps he is unaware that there is no constitution at the moment. It is being rewritten.

"On the military’s close monitoring on Ms Yingluck, Mr Norawit said it undermines and restricts her personal rights and freedom."

Again clueless. Under military rule there are no personal rights and freedoms.

Her incompetence led to billions in theft/loss/ graft so she is getting the treatment she deserves

Add that people in her family have set an example they are runners ...

No sympathy from me

Hope she gets locked up for life

Not for life, the most prison time she can recieve is 10 years. Interesting development yesterdays search. Obviously a prison term is going to be handed down or the army wouldn't be stalking her every move. I wonder which prison she will be sent to?
