1,380 immigration police set for Suvarnabhumi airport posts

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Immigration Bureau Police reiterated the readiness of both its staff and technical equipment in providing services at the new Suvarnabhumi international airport, with a total of 1,380 immigration officers ready to be deployed from the beginning of September, Pol. Lt-Gen. Suwat Thamrongsrisakul said Tuesday.

The immigration police commissioner also reaffirmed the efficiency of its anti-terror technology being deployed at the new airport which is due to officially open for domestic flights on September 15 and international flights on September 28.

A total of 178 immigration booths at Suvanabhumi airport will be fully manned by 1,380 officers, 380 more than at Don Muang Airport, in test-run operations starting on September 1. The staff will working three shifts to provide 24-hour services, Gen Suwat said.

Regarding concerns about terrorists entering the kingdom, the commissioner said the security system at the new airport is the highest technology, with data tracking processing systems monitoring both 'black' lists and 'watch' lists upgraded to the latest capabilities.

Passengers appearing on either the black list or watch list can be detected within 20 seconds upon their passport check, he said.

First off , I came through Don Muang many time and never saw more

than a dozen booths.

This is 178 booths?

It's a long time since school maths but isn't that 10 per booth ?

The queue behind the booth is going to be as long as the queue in front ?

This I gotta see !

Alright it is a long time but it's nearly 10 , near as dammit

I don't want to say that Gen. Suwat has a credibility problem or a believability problem, but it was only a couple of days ago when:

After initially trumpeting their big catch, Thai immigration police have also backed away from some of the claims made last week.

Initially, General Suwat said Karr told him he had drugged and sexually assaulted six-year-old JonBenet in the basement of her family's home in Boulder, Colorado, after picking her up from school. But JonBenet was on school holidays and the autopsy found no drugs in her blood.

General Suwat now says Karr made the sexual assault claim but perhaps not those about administering drugs or collecting her from school.

General Suwat also recanted the statement about JonBenet having been collected from school and that it was based on a TV documentary he had seen, not what Karr had told him.

How about the reliabibilty/correctness of these list? I have my doubts that we are safer than before.

And the amount of staff 1380 for 178booth is truly amazing.

The majority off staff will be used as runners to the computer that they have located behind the immigration barrier....hence the 20 seconds !

From my experience, I think rather that the staff is used to escort "VIPs" past the customs hall and directly to their chauffered cars. We would not want the embarassment of somebody actually checking one of the Khun Ying's many pieces of luggage after a shopping trip now or asking them to pay even a sataang on import duty.

Also, don't forget the shift work, if there are three shifts and even just one day off a week, that will reduce the numbers. I am pleased about the amount of booths. When we arrive at DM, we are usually taken to the VIP or diplomatic bit to go through . This is simply because we have children. Everyone should have at least one to ease your way through immigration!

Why are all these officers ready to be deployed by 1st September, when the first international flights are not due to land until 28th September ?

Is this a cunning plan, to give them all four weeks paid holiday, or are these actually just the normal staff from Don Muang, doing their usual jobs in their usual place-of-work, but on some bureaucrat's list as due to transfer on the 28th, along with everybody else ?

I clocked the speed with my stop watch during the last few entries at Don Muang and the passport check always took between 55 and 65 seconds per passenger, average 1 minute. So now I know that 20 seconds of this is waiting for a computer response.

The number of officers quoted must factor-in those on tea break, those on toilet break, and those just strutting around for the sake of something to do.

Nothing will change. The queues will be just as long.

Then, arriving visitors can join the scamble to get on one of the shuttle buses - just to catch a taxi.

It is probably a good thing they don't let food vendors into the customs areas or there would be even less active staff. Although the folk waiting would be able to do something with their time while waiting.
