My current USA passport expires soon so on 2 March I will apply for a new one and probably pick it up around 18 March. My retirement visa ends on 10 April. So what I would like to do is go to CW Immigration on the 19th of March to renew my retirement visa for another year and of course have it stamped into my new passport. I know the consulate will give me a letter asking Immigration to transfer the visa to my new passport. I remember I did this 10 years ago and it seemed like it was a pretty painless procedure but maybe things have changed. Has anyone done this recently and if so what exactly was the procedure?

They will first do an annotation of your last visa, then transfer the entry stamp from that visa, and your current extension stamp. They will want copies of those stamps to do your extension in your new passport.

You can do it in one trip but it may require two numbers for different desks.

Hopefully you made an appointment at the embassy for 2nd March if you're doing it in Bangkok or you plan to attend a consular outreach program for the new passport application.

You can fill out the form to transfer the relevant stamps (they don't transfer visas, just the information) to your new passport before you apply for the annual retirement extension of stay (it's not a visa) renewal:

There's a report, I hear, that there is a new form to be used, but I used the above form when I transferred the stamps recently and they accepted it.

You need photocopies of the old and new passport main pages and both passports, the original visa you used to enter when you first applied for an extension of stay and entry stamp, the latest extension stamp and any valid re-entry permit. Don't forget to move your departure card and 90 day report receipts to the new passport.

When I applied for a new US passport a few months ago at a consular outreach they emailed me to collect it in ... as I recall ...under 10 days.

If the visa was in the last passport, they'll want a copy.

If it was in the one before that, they don't need it. They'll just need a copy of the page that shows the info they put in the last time you got a new passport.
