2 Day Overstay Land Crossing

Recommended Posts

If you drive yourself or are a passenger in a private vehicle, almost never. However, in the unlikely event you were questioned, explain you are leaving the country and you should be fine.

If you are going in a visa run van, that could be a different story so I would avoid those.

For your information though, there are almost no checkpoints on the way to any Lao border crossing. On the way to the Burmese border (any of the 4 crossings EXCEPT Ranong) there are a lot, to the Cambodian border not as many (just one if going to the main Aran/Poipet crossing located around 20km before the border but most private vehicles are waved through). I think if you were to catch the train you also wouldn't encounter any problems as there are no checks if travelling that way.

To Malaysia there are almost none heading to the main WESTERN crossings, but of course if heading via the three southernmost border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat or Pattani there are more than anywhere else in the country and you will be stopped and questioned (but not so much to look at your passport per se). However, do NOT under any circumstances venture into those 3 provinces as they are dangerous and you never know when an explosive device might go off or a deranged insurgent may attack a checkpoint to kill some soldiers or police. Many foreign governments have warned against all travel to those provinces and any insurance coverage you may have will be void if you were to go there and get into trouble. Don't do it.

What type of entry do you have now? You might be eligible for a 30 day extension.

If not eligible for an extension you could apply for a 7 day extension. pay the 1900 baht fee and be given 7 days to leave the country. No need to worry abut being caught on the way to the border if you do this.

Last year I had a one day overstay and I made a visa run with Bangkok Buddy Travel services to Cambodia. At the immigration office I initialed and signed a form or two and paid the 500 baht fine. I had lunch at the casino, turned around and went back into Thailand. I had originally arrived in BKK from the USA and had the nominal 30 day visa exempt. There definitely are police on the road and more as you near the Cambodian border. I can't speak to the actual probabilities of being stopped. I have made visa runs three times now, averaging about two years between them as I extend a holiday a bit. Being on a visa run minivan which presumes you are booking a roundtrip and intending to head back into Thailand, I don't think the police will bother you too much.

In 2013 (after trip to Cambodia from Thailand), when leaving Thailand, immigration say I overstay by two days because land border crossing only give another 15 days. Border crossing by air or sea gives 30 days. I did not know this and was fined 2000 baht when leaving Thailand. No big deal, paid and was given receipt at immigration departure and allowed to continue my travels. No lectures, no threats coffee1.gif
