Work Permit Question Please!

Featured Replies

I am moving to Thailand and have the option of applying for a WP or Retirement Visa (don't ask but I promise it is legit!).
Can anyone advise the advantage of one over the other in terms of reporting or financial qualifications?
And how easy would it be to convert a WP into a RV at a later date?

Thank you for any and all useful information. This forum is invaluable!

What is your understanding of a WP ?

You most certainly do not have the option of applying for a retirement extension of stay ( there are no retirement visas) or a WP

You may find it more advantageous to explain exactly what you seek to achieve.

Once you explain that members will be in a position to offer constructive advice.

A workpermit allows you to work, which you get from the department of labour. A visa allows you to stay in the country which you get from immigration, a consulate or an embassy. 2 completely different things

To try and answer your questions (before the experts get here) try this:

I am moving to Thailand and have the option of applying for a WP or Retirement Visa (don't ask but I promise it is legit!).

Assuming you mean by this you have the option of getting a non-o visa based on retirement or a non-o or non-b based on working? Work permits are for working, to enter the country requires a visa and extensions there after will be based on that visa.

Can anyone advise the advantage of one over the other in terms of reporting or financial qualifications?

Extensions for a non-b or non-o (for work) do not require a lump sum in the bank, but do require you to meet wage stipulation depending on what country you come from. Extension based on retirement will require a seasoned lump sum of 800,000 baht or a monthly income of 65,000 baht. On both extensions, you will need to report to immigration every 90 days (if you don't leave the country), If you do leave the country, the 90 day clock starts again whenever you re-enter on you re-entry permit during the time of your extension.

NB: If you get your work permit on a multi entry non-o or non-b visa, there is no need for reporting but you will have to leave the country every 90 days. With the multi entry, there is no requirement to show a minimum monthly wage.

And how easy would it be to convert a WP into a RV at a later date?

You cannot convert a work permit to a visa, as explained earlier. You can however convert the reason for stay on your non-o or non-b visa which you had for work. (Need to ask the experts for the specifics on this though)

Hope that helps get through the basics.................wink.png

Experts, please correct if I am wrong anywhere, certainly don't want to mislead.

If you go for a visa and extensions based on retirement, you will not be allowed to work in Thailand.

If you go for a visa and extensions based on retirement, you will not be allowed to work in Thailand.

In most cases.
