NIA admitted car bomb this morning was an assassination plan

The director of the National Intelligence Agency has admitted that this morning's discovery of explosives in a car parked near the prime minister's residence was a foiled assassination plan.

Director of the National Intelligence Agency, Pol Gen Jumphol Manmai (จุมพล มั่นหมาย) today cited a report filed by the Royal Thai Police, revealing that the explosives found in the car in question were prompted to blow after pressing the magic button.

After a more intensified investigation, the instruments and the location of the bomb possibly led to the speculated assassination plan of the prime minister.

Pol Gen Jumphol said that the National Intelligence Agency and the Royal Thai Police, its ally, will have to slightly adjust their working strategies.

However, asked by reporters what he and the prime minister had discussed today, Pol Gen Jumphol refused to clarify the matter.

Police explosive experts defused a bomb hidden in a car near the residence of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and detained a suspect Thursday, police said.

"The bomb experts have defused the bomb and the car is being towed to a safe place for further checking," police said.

Police detained an army officer, identified as Lt Thawatchai Klinchana, driver of the car whose bore fake license. He was taken to the police Crime Suppression Division for interrogation.

Two sticks of dynamite, each weighing 0.45 kilograms, and some fertilizer were discovered inside the vehicle.

Pol Maj Gen Aswin Khwanmuang, deputy chief of the Central Investigation Bureau, said that 4.5-kilogram bomb was found in the car belonging to Thawatchai.

ITV reported that the vehicle was driven back and forth near Thaksin's residence and a security guard of the prime minister urged police to chase and stop it.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Official campaigning began on Thursday for a general election re-run in Thailand aimed at ending a political crisis but doubts remained over its October scheduling.

With the process of selecting a new Election Commission to replace one disgraced in the original April poll not expected to be completed until early next month, the opposition is calling for the re-run to be postponed by a month.

The more time the opposition has, they say, the more his support would be eroded after the April poll was declared invalid and three election commissioners were jailed for four years last month for abuses in handling it.

That was the latest drama in a political crisis which left Thailand with a caretaker government unable to make major policy decisions and no functioning parliament which has slowed economic growth.

In recent days, Thaksin was booed and jeered by protesters at two Bangkok malls, where his supporters and opponents clashed, leaving some with injuries.

That led to fears scuffles could escalate into street battles with both sides accusing the other of mobilising supporters to instigate unrest, unnerving investors, analysts said.

Fears of violence were also fanned on Thursday by police saying they had thwarted what they believed to be preparations for a bomb attack on Thaksin's house.

Thaksin says he missed assassination

BANGKOK: -- Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt Thursday because he left his house earlier than normal.

Thaksin said that two soldiers driving a car rigged with an improvised bomb were stopped when they were spotted circling his home in southern Bangkok in the morning.

"It's my lucky day. I have been varying my travel times after the intelligence services told me people were trying to kill me. If I hadn't left an hour earlier than usual, I might not be here now," he said on Thai television.

Thaksin added that several other attempts have been made to harm him in recent months when traveling on official duties. He alluded to "incidents" at military airports and a recent car crash that involved a car in one of his convoys.

The controversial deputy chief of the Internal Security Operations Command, Panlop Pinmanee, was promptly sacked on the prime minister's orders Thursday, after the two suspected assassins were found to belong to his military oversight office.

Panlop caused consternation earlier this year when he said a military coup could not be ruled out if political instability persists. There were unconfirmed reports that one of the suspects is Panlop's driver.

Tension has been climbing in the Thai capital ahead of an October 15 general election that Thaksin is expected to win, despite being widely disliked by the middle class and old Bangkok elites.

The driver and passenger in the suspect car, who attempted to flee, were later arrested and were being interrogated by the police. The two suspects, one a lieutenant, were identified as soldiers serving with the Thai army's Internal Security Operations Command.

The army's deputy spokesman, Colonel Akkara Thiprote, said two sticks of dynamite were found in the car and that the army would cooperate with police in the investigation.

Two bags of urea fertilizer, often used in making bombs, were also reportedly found in the car.

The discovery came on the first day of official campaigning for what is shaping up to be a bitterly fought general election on October 15. Fistfights have broken out between opponents and supporters of the premier at his recent public appearances.

The prime minister said that after this "assissination attempt" he would make only vital public appearances. "I must assign routine appearances to my deputies. We can't let these people succeed," he said in a television interview.

The opposition People's Alliance for Democracy has said this week that it would restart the mass demonstrations that rocked the government earlier this year if the authorities did not quickly identify the Thaksin supporters who kicked and punched protestors this week.

Thai newspapers reported Thursday that at least two people who beat protestors while police looked on Monday were known to have links to officials close to the prime minister.

A vehicle-free security zone has been temporarily declared around Thaksin's sprawling compound on Snitwongse Road, extending as much as a kilometre from the house.

Those opposed to Thaksin - many in Bangkok's middle class, Thai intellectuals, the older elite, advisers to the monarch and elements in the armed forces - have accused the prime minister of running a corrupt regime designed to enrich his family and a clique of rich businessmen while also undermining and eliminating checks and balances on his government.

The prime minister remains popular, however, with many rural voters and entrepreneurs and is likely to win the election. The prime minister has repeatedly claimed since taking power in early 2001 that threats have been made against his life, although his critics have accused him of paranoia and sympathy-seeking.

Slightly off topic. Looking at the various intelligence agencies:

Military Gen. Panlop the influential deputy boss of ISOC has lost his job.

Military Gen. Winai is to be moved from heading the NSC and it is believed will be replaced by a police General.

Police Gen. Jumphol of the NIA claimed todays event was an assassination plot. He also referred to the NIA and its ally the Royal Thai Police.

I wouldnt be surprised if speculation went into overdrive on this one.

It seems like a Keystone Cops type comedy. Somebody forgot to inform security that they were supposed to find the car after the driver had already parked it and disappeared and they went ahead and arrested the army officer driver. Must be a lot of red faces. No wonder the head of ISOC got sacked but no doubt Toxin already has a former classmate in mind as his replacement. Probably same guy planted the bomb outside Prem's residence. A serious assassination attempt wouldn't miss like the Tamil Tiger who waited a year in a rented room for the perfect shot at the government minister getting out of his pool.

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra holds an urgent meeting of the military top brass and national police chief at Government House following the finding of bomb in a car near his house.

Thaksin held a meeting with the commanders of the three armed forces together with Defence Minister Gen Thamarak Isarangura at 3 pm.

The police chief attended the meeting at 3:30 pm.

Before the meeting with the top brass, Thaksin held a meeting with Gen Winai Phattiyakul, secretary-general of the National Security Council, Pol Col Jumpol Munmai, director of the National Intelligence Agency, Gen Pornchai Kranlert, deputy army chief, and Gen Anupong Paojinda, commander of the First Army Area.

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra claimed Thursday that he had known about a plot to assassinate him for two weeks.

Thaksin also claimed to know the identities of those who made attempts on his life.

Pallop denies planning assassination attempt against Thaksin

Gen Pallop Pinmanee, sacked deputy director of the Internal Security Operation Command, Thursday denied he had planned to assassinate caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Pallop told a press conference after Thaksin sacked him as deputy ISOC director that had he really planned to do it, the assassination attempt would have not failed.

Pollop said Lt Thawatchai Klinchana, who was arrested for hiding bomb inside his car found parked near Thaksin's house, was no longer his driver because the army officer had been deployed to work in the deep South three months ago.

Thaksin sacked Pallop, retired army general, after an Isoc army officer, Lt. Thawatchai Klinchana, was arrested and charged with possessing explosive materials, including TNT, without a permit.

Thawatchai's car, which had a significant amount of explosives, was found parked not far Thaksin's residence on the route through which the premier's motorcade normally passes.

"You know me. If I was behind it, I would not have missed," said the shaken Pallop. "I wouldn't have sent Thawatchai to drive around, as reported, the Prime Minister's residence. It would have just set it off without giving away any prior warnings."

Pallop also pointed out that the explosive devices were not assembled and therefore was not ready to be detonated. "The explosive was being transported, not assembled to be detonated," he added.

The embattled general said Thawatchai used to be a sergeant when he was serving as his official driver when he was the secretary to the Defense Council. Thawatchai was only a sergeant at the time. Pallop did not explain about his promotion to the rank of a lieutenant.

He added that about three months ago, he reassigned Thawatchai to the restive South to work with for Isoc as an intelligence officer.
