Pattaya, Chon Buri:- A 49-year-old British tourist living at a Pattaya condominium with his Thai girlfriend jumped from his room on the 36th floor to his death in front of security officers late Wednesday night, police said.

Pol Lt Chorphaka Prueksachart, an interrogator on duty at Pattaya police station, said police concluded that John David Knotts committed suicide because the incident was witnessed by security officers of the condominium who tried but failed to save him.

Chorphaka said Knotts has been staying at a luxurious condominium on Soi Wong Amart in Tambon Naklua of Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district with his Thai girlfriend, Kalaya James Napier, 47, for a month. Chorphaka said the name of the condominium was withheld.

The incident happened at 11 pm Wednesday.

Police did not find any trace of foul play inside the condominium room on the 36th floor. Weeping Kalaya told police that she had been in contact with Knotts for over two years and he had just travelled to stay with her a month ago.

Kalaya said her boyfriend came under pressure after his family called him, telling him to return home in England.

He received the phone call from his family again Wednesday night, telling him to return to England or else the family would severe the tie with him and would inform the Thai authorities that he had overstayed visa.

Kalaya said after Knotts hang up the phone, he tried to force her to return to England with him but she rejected the offer and the two had an argument.

She later decided to go downstairs to seek help from security officers but when she returned to the room with security officers, Knotts ran out to the balcony. Security officers tried to pull him back but he broke free and jumped down, Kalaya told police.

could well be the case but no way to prove it unless she had motive and gained a large amount of money from the death

what is brilliant about the biggest sex tourist destination in SEA? apart from the obvious? IMO it's a national disgrace and an embarrassment. To dislike the place is not 'weakness.' Obviously the jumper had enough of it.

Whilst Pattaya might have some areas that are not quite as nice, I very much doubt it was the reason the gentleman jumped; it is not "obvious" to me at all.

so I thought that a someone jumping from a window landed on a British tourist.

One simple bottle of beer makes few of the security guards very happy or a small tips, wondering if offered a big amount what can be done...???

Call me cynical still the story doesnt seem right.

Remember like the story of a farang who was shot dead and the security guard and the manager claimed it was on self defense but later the CCTV footage from the other establishment clearly showed how the murder was staged and planted upon.

The reason the article gives about pressure from home are hardly convincing and there is no evidence to support the claims. I have known a 3 top themselves in that dumping ground, it seems to be a last stopping off place for the desperate the lonely and the misfits. At first the prostitution scene might be fun but it's a fools paradise. We will probably never know the real reason why this guy killed himself, pointing the finger back home is typically Thai. Pattaya behind the glitz is a crime ridden horror story riddled with corruption, prostitution and falseness, if some choose not to see that up to them.

Yeah "Tourist murdered by being thrown off a balcony - no suspects" Pattaya is a tourist economy mostly. Nobody wants to see that very very very bad for tourism headline. That's the same in every tourist destination. You just have to ask yourself is Pattaya, Thailand the kind of place where they can make that headline go away and one about suicide appear in it's place. When I first got here that would seem ridiculous to me coming from a place where that would be very unlikely. After living in Thailand for 10 years...you have to talk to his closest friends and family and ask what they think the chances of this guy would kill himself. Notice in many western countries that's addressed even if it looks like a suicide.

Something not right with this story. Forgetting any views of what Pattaya is or isn't - I mean, if he thought it was bad he could have hopped on a plane to CM or anywhere got $50 or so - I can't believe this has anything to do with his family in the UK. If you get threatened with "come home or we're cutting you off" all diving off of a balcony to your death achieves is totally ensuring you get cut off, right? He was 49 years old and assuming he wasn't mentally unbalanced (nothing about that in the story) then the normal reaction would be to say, "suit yourself" and change your phone number. The fact that it was witnessed by security guards lends no credibility to the story; the opposite, in fact.

The story has a peculiar Thai quality about it that I would not associate with a suicide by a western man. I would say the supposed girl friend is being creative; possibility just to deflect her own feelings of guilt, or maybe to cover up something worse.
