SCG Chemical, fishermen sink artificial reefs

PATTAYA:--Naklua fishermen, government officials and representatives from SCG Chemical Co. continued work to rebuild local marine populations with the laying of “fish houses” in Pattaya-area waters.

Former City Councilman Urit Nantasurasak and staff from the Center for Conservation of Marine and Coastal Fisheries in Rayong met fishermen in Naklua Bay Feb. 12 to organize and sink the artificial reefs made from PVC pipes.

SCG has assembled and laid more than 200 reefs as part of its “Beautiful Beach Home for Fish” project, with goals to reach the 300 mark by the end of the year.

Company executives said the houses are made from PVC left over from the production of piping. It’s safe for the environment and is conducive to coral, eventually making each unit into a small house-life reef for fish.

Increased numbers of artificial reefs will lead to greater fish populations closer to shore, aiding the local fishing community, organizers said.

Agree no tires but actually pipes dont work either. Most of thailand is surrounded by shallow reef and adding more will not have an substantial effect at all. I know 2 places in phuket where they tried the PVC and neither of them have worked.
