It seems thatall the advice is about forming a company, but I understand it is possible to get a self employed visa type b, but it may not be available all over Thailand Can you get a self employed visa?

No such thing as a self employed non immigrant 'b' visa.

You always need a WP to work and in theory you can get a self employed Work Permit (see form WP1), but there is little to no evidence of any success other than for certain freelance journalists supported by a recognised Thai Media company.

I don't believe it has to be a Thai media company, but you have to be an accredited member of the media and would need to work for a news agency or such, which could be a foreign agency.
