How do you say (pronounce) that in Thai? vs. What's this in Thai?

I'm confused about the exact meaning of the following two sentences:

พูดเป็นภาษาไทยอย่างไร (How do you say this in Thai?) and

ภาษาไทยพูดว่าอะไร (How do you say this in Thai?).

Do these sentences actually mean "How do you PRONOUNCE this in Thai?". I've been told that it's better to use the latter sentence - but I don't know why. If somebody with a much better command of the Thai language could clear that up for me, I'd much appreciate it.

I've just come across a new sentence "นี่เรี่ยกว่าอะไร" (What's this in Thai?), hence the confusion regarding the correct meaning of two above sentences.

I think I've just figured it out...

พูดเป็นภาษาไทยอย่างไร and ภาษาไทยพูดว่าอะไร both mean (I think) "What's this in Thai?" and นี่เรี่ยกว่าอะไร means "What's this CALLED in Thai?" - basically the exact same question, just different ways to ask it (same as in English). Is this correct or not?

Thanks!

Laowai's example is more how you'd say "How do I pronounce this word?"

There are lots of ways to say what you want to say though, e.g.

นี้อะไรครับ - Would be "What's this?"

นี่เรี่ยกว่าอะไร - What's this called?

ผมพูดคำว่า _____ เป็นภาษาไทยอย่างไร - How do I say _____ in Thai?

คำว่า _____ ภาษาไทยคืออะไร - What's _____ in Thai?

This one is the best for asking what a word is called... นี่เรี่ยกว่าอะไร because the actual translation of this is "This called word what?" Yes, the put their words in a different order than us.

So if you are asking about a "word", that is the one to use.

But the others are ok to ask,,,,,what is this? Fine.... นี้อะไรครับ That is for a man to say. [ นี้อะไร ] that is the what is this? Then a man always puts ครับ at the end of everything to be polite.
