Charges for rape, murder of 8-year-old

Police have charged a plantation guard who allegedly raped and killed an 8-year-old girl in Kampong Chhnang province last week.

So Sim, 40, appeared yesterday at Kampong Chhnang Provincial Court where he was charged with aggravated murder involving torture, cruelty or rape, according to Child Protection Unit’s James McCabe, who assisted local authorities on the case.

McCabe said the suspect, now in pretrial detention, was arrested as he attempted to flee the area on Friday, the day after his victim was discovered by her family about 150 metres from her home in Cholkiri district.

He said Sim had been drinking with the victim’s uncle and some men about 15 metres from the victim’s house on Wednesday.

After consuming beer and rice wine, Sim allegedly left the gathering and called for the girl to follow before taking her to a secluded spot by a nearby riverbank, raping and strangling her, McCabe said.

He added that a quick response by local authorities had stopped the suspect escaping.

I read this and just shake my head in disbelief. 8 year old child raped and killed. There are some really sick men out there.
