A Turkish man arrested in a beachside Cambodian resort town for stabbing another man has been sent to Sihanoukville’s provincial prison after trying to flee while still handcuffed, local media reported on Monday.

Mehmet Tekoğlu, whose Facebook page says he runs the Sea Cambodia boating company, was arrested Friday and charged with intentional violence over the weekend for the stabbing of an Israeli man Wednesday.

The Cambodia Daily reported that Tekoğlu made off after asking permission to use the bathroom, first climbing over a wall and then running into a forest, where he was apprehended.

“We charged him with intentional violence against the Israeli national,” the Daily quoted deputy prosecutor Ream Chanmony as saying.

“After we charged him, the accused ran away from the courthouse. But police arrested him again after he ran about 300 meters away from the courthouse,” he added.

Turkish Ambassador to Cambodia İlhan Tuğ told The Anadou Agency by email Monday that the embassy is “aware of the situation and monitoring the developments on a day to day basis with the local authorities.”

After Wednesday’s alleged stabbing, Tekoğlu was the subject of a drive-by shooting Thursday, police had said. While he managed to drive away, a Cambodian man was injured and sent to hospital.

Chanmony told the Daily that an investigation into the shooting incident remains ongoing. Police have said that the incidents stem from a dispute between Israeli restaurant owners and Tekoğlu.
