Very Happy to observe Thai 'Holidays'/'Special Days'

Can someone please explain, though, why it is OK to eat slaughtered pigs/chickens/fish/ ducks/prawns/buffalo etc. on these days but you can't buy a drink in the process of the production of such no life, as far as I am aware has been sacrificed?

Better don't think too much about it biggrin.png

And be assured that the bargirls who loose their business today also have no idea why,

Its a slow process to secularization of this country.

A widening gap between the generation iPhone and the Buddhist clergy.

Same backlog in development like in other fields.

Thai's are buhddists,in name only, really they are animists worshiping the spirits that live in,trees, rocks etc, just like everyone did until someone came up with the idea of a big guy, that we could kill, rape and pillage for and always be right.

It is very simple. You don't have to kill the meat in your food, meaning you didn't violates one of the basic 5 precepts. Drinking however, does violate a precept.

BTW the abatoir out this way was closed today. They rarely close.

Whether you pay someone to kill on your behalf or you do it yourself makes little difference....logically speaking.

You could certainly make that argument. I might even tend to agree.

However, I am not a Buddhist theologian.

The Dalai Lama: No, this watch came recntly in a parcel from America. Then about taking meat, there are some contardictions but in vinaya no prohibition in eating meat, so monks in Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, they take both veg and non veg food. One time I asked, discussed this subject with a monk from Sri Lanka about 40 years ago, he said Buddhist monks are neither veg nor non veg... he should accept whatever he gets, so that's the principle. But vinaya clearly mentions that meat which was purposely killed for you was not to be eaten but in general was not prohibited, some books like langaavatarasutra prohibited any kind of meat, including fish etc but some other texts not prohibiting, so different case, I think practically in northern part of Tibet, no vegetables.

OP, you've been here for ~20 years and you're still asking these questions ?

I am 100% confident that I could have drunk from the point where I left Soi Made in Thailand at 12:30am this morning right up until midnight tonight if I'd been sufficiently determined to do so and could remain conscious for that many hours of mindless inebriation. There is a group of Farang 100m from my front door who sit at rickety old tables in what is basically a 'mom and pop' grocery store drinking beer from the fridge every night, laughing along with the old ladies who work in the shop : I'm confident they dont let a little thing like a religious holiday interrupt their drinking regime. Several bars were open along Buakhow on Asalha Bukha Day last year and that doesnt begin to take into account the restaurants which would have sold beer on the sly from the time they opened this morning. The rule in Pattaya is simple - do it on the expectation that you won't get caught and be prepared to pay if you are caught. Simple.

Whatever religious significance the holiday may have for the devout, money talks 365 days a year.

@dave2, I'm guessing there are already Farang hanging out of the bars that face onto Soi 4 - always amazed me how quickly they'd materialise in those bars the morning after I'd taken care of my few remaining brain cells. Those day shift gals are an attractive bunch - combine that with a beer and you'd need to be one serious drinker ;)
