BANGKOK: -- The Loog-Silpa newspaper published by Silapakorn University has won the "Pirab-Noi" award for best newspaper among nationwide universities. The award includes Bt20,000 cash.

The event, organised by Thai Journalists Association (TJA) and True Corporation, aimed to honour publications from nationwide universities.

An award was also given to a report considered useful to society. This year, a report on an under-qualified pharmacist who handed out "second-hand" medicine, by Hor-Kao newspaper from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, was the winner, and received Bt15,000.

The TJA yesterday also appointed Wanchai Wongmeechai, senior editor of Naew-Na newspaper, as its new president.

The TJA meeting yesterday came ahead of its 60th anniversary, which also marks Reporters' Day today.

The attending members also selected new board members, and the new board then voted for its new president.

The new board includes representatives from various leading newspapers in the country such as Thairath, Daily News, Matichon, ASTV, The Nation, Bangkok Post, Post Today, Ban Muang and Naew Na newspaper.

The outgoing president, Pradit Ruangdit, said members should be proud of journalists' achievements over the past 60 years because there had been some challenging periods.

He said at times they have had to report from political rally sites, or operate under martial law. However, he said journalists had managed to stand by their principles to protect their right of speech.

New president Wanchai said that TJA's scope of work has increased in recent years. He, therefore, sought better cooperation from its members with their mutual goal of adding value to society. He also said certain areas of the media needed reform.

"History shows that the media association was set up in order to fight for what is right. We need to remember that spirit and strengthen it. We need to have a spirit that loves justice, and a willingness to fight for what is right for the benefit of the society. Perhaps this spirit has been weakened by media rivalry and competition, but we should attempt to reinstall it. That's my intention," said the new TJA president.
