You apparently have an extension of stay not a visa. You need one year of validity to apply for an extension at an immigration office. If you have less than a year the extension will only be valid to the date your passport expires.

Next year is the year you have to deal with this.Could be dicey. I amnot sure if you will need to renew visa extension first or get new passport first. I just went through it for the second time with new passports. Mine was easy I had a longer time frame between passport ending and visa extension time. you only have 9 days depends on what country you from. Check with your consulate or embassy and find out how long it will take to get new passport. If you can get passport in less than 9 days no worries. Next year simple apply for extension of stay .Then get new passport and go back to innigration and extend your stay again, before the nine days ends. If you cannot do it this way seek advice from immigration and embassy. In my humble opinion it would probably be just as easy to let this extension of stay lapse and simply start a new retiremnet visa and extensions.

Contrary to advice above, do not let your extention lapse! In the past when the financial requirements have increased those with unbroken extensions get grandfathered under the old rules ! Simply get your annual extention this year then depending on the lead time for a new passport get that nearer your extention expiry date and simply get your next extention in your new passport, Jomtien will allow you to apply up to one month in advance so if for example you get a new passport in April 2016 you could simply go to immigration and get your usual annual extention until May 2017!

He will not have a problem because he will have plenty of time to renew his passport before his extension expires next year.

I don't know of any country that will not allow a person to renew a passport early. Many suggest you do it 9 months early.

When he gets his new passport he would just need to go to immigration and have his stamps transferred to his new passport. Then apply for the new extension using his new passport.

You are right.I never thought of doing during this year. I was stuck on next years renewal. And once he gets his new passport the rest is easy as you say. I just did it this week.My extension has been in 3 passports now. Now at least he has sound advice. Thanks.
