Northeast Red Leader Dismisses Links to Grenade Suspects

The NVDD neckerchiefs (upper right) found on the suspects arrested in connection with the grenade attack on the criminal court in Bangkok, 7 March 2015.

BANGKOK — A former Redshirt leader has denied any connection between Saturday’s grenade attack on a Bangkok court house and the Northeast-based political organization he helped found last year.

Suphon Attawong, aka Rambo Isaan, said today that he is concerned by the military's claims that two suspects accused of launching the attack were carrying neckerchiefs that belonged to his group when they were arrested on 7 March.

Suphon insisted that his group, called the National Volunteers for Defence of Democracy (NVDD), had no connection to the two suspects or the grenade attack. According to Suphon, the NVDD disbanded on 31 May 2014, a week after the military toppled a Redshirt-backed government in a coup.

"I am no longer involved in politics," Suphon said. "Nowadays, I only take care of my family, and I intend not to get involved in politics ever again."

Suphon also said the neckerchiefs shouldn't be interpreted as evidence that the suspects were active in the NVDD, as the group handed out more than 10,000 of them last year.

"I don't know who has neckerchiefs," Suphon said. "The action of the suspects caused damage to my reputation and may cause misunderstanding about me, so I'd like the police to investigate this matter. If they are found guilty of any crime, then they should be prosecuted strictly."

Well, it's not much to go on. I got a neckerchief with a chopper printed on it so maybe some people think I am a crazy biker dude!

There's a lot more to go on, but red shirt biased KhaoSod news left out those other connections between the red shirts and the grenade tossers so as to cast doubt on the connection.

It would be a shame if their distortions worked.

Read the new threads and the Thai newspapers (or have them translated to you).

I thought you knew what they were and would be kind and share with us so we can all have the real factual story like yourself. We don't all read thai or have a personal translator. So help out another human being.

You don't know have any Thais around you that can help?

How are you able to discuss current events about Thailand if you don't ever read (or have translated) the news about Thailand that is written by Thais?

Unfortunately it's how worthless, over the top propaganda by Khaosod english news ends up being discussed.

There is more than one English language newspaper in Thailand. It's ok if you don't want to help out I understand, thanks anyway.

More likely they will think you lack taste and discernment.

Damage to Isaan Rambo's reputation - does he somehow think that he is a person of repute?

I have found what's reported in the Thai news is sometimes different from what's reported in the English news. Not 100% sure why, but that's what I've found.

I'd agree with that Craig. I've always put it down to a mixture of translation differences, a desire to "influence" by certain media owners, and journalists writing for a specific audience in mind.

Guess there may be some other reasons too.

Thai goose sauce not same farang gander sauce.

A former Redshirt leader has denied any connection between Saturday’s grenade attack on a Bangkok court house and the Northeast-based political organization he helped found last year.

Unless Khun Suphon Attawong, aka Rambo Isaan, knew the names of every member of his group, he really can't say who was or who wasn't a member. If his organization distributed 10,000 of those neckerchiefs, as he said, then there are certainly too many members and sympathizers involved to keep track of. Even if he knew these grenade-throwers were in his organization, does anyone believe he would admit it? More to come as the investigation proceeds and more arrests made. Rambo Isaan laugh.png

Surprise Surprise I didn't see that one coming Or maybe I did It takes a while for Thai scholars to form an thought.

Rambo Isaan.

Even the names they use and are proud of are associated to violent killers in movies.

Sure, sure he will never get involved in politics again because that narrative suits his agenda now. Like thaksin when he said he would not get involved in politics. Like Jatuporn when he said he was sick when he had to go to court. Like Tida who denied succession when there are youtube video's of the leaders saying it.

"Lies to further the cause" should be a UDD principle, but they don't follow their own principles so I assume if it was a principle they would start telling the truth!

Thank god these red shirts are but a shadow of the past.

like prayuth who said there will be no coup, I will not be PM and I will not hang onto power. Yes all these his thais are exactly the same. Different names but identical twins.

Yes!! - apart from the fact that "he will not hang on to power" of which he won't once his mission is finished.

As for his reputation :

Arisman said Suporn Attawong, another red-shirt fugitive, is still alive.

The two red-shirt leaders have fled from Bangkok together when troops moved in to crackdown on protesters on May 19.

Cowardice may be a good word for it.

Yes coward is the best word to describe someone who would run rather than stay with his fellow red leaders when the time came to be moved out.

it's rather hilarious that posters go after KS for being biased on this article...

First the topic of the article is how the former leader of the NVDD denies a connection to the attacks. So they provide a series of quotes from old Rambo, dredge up some pre-coup quote, and point out that he was "adjusted" right after the 'intervention'. All of which are verifiable facts.

As for the story, does anyone expect old Rambo Isaan to say anything other than this? Really?

Under the current conditions in Thailand, there is no reason to believe any particular statement from either the police or their suspects. Take it all with a giant grain of salt.

The police and army who caught the two in the act of throwing a grenade and have been investigating their contacts are far more believable then the reds who you defend

This character who likes to call himself Rambo has no credibility at all and showing his previous acts and for that matter lies underscores that lack of credibility which does have a bearing on what he is saying today.

Weren't those neckerchief part of Suthep and the Mad monks uniform?

Why you would not want understand that red shirts movement is a criminal organisation ?

Their movement is linking with a lot of criminal case like children murders !
