State agencies urged to join central gateway for internet applications

BANGKOK: -- The government has advised all government agencies and state enterprises that have created their own internet applications to report to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology so as to enable convenience to the public to access to state services and information through a single gateway.

Government spokesman Capt Yongyuth Mayalarb said the advice came as the Electronic Government Agency (EGA) had informed the Cabinet of the progress of its information technology to provide the public with access to state services through Government Application Centre (GAC), a web portal of mobile device applications created by various state agencies.

In response to the request by the EGA, the Cabinet had tasked state agencies that have their own mobile device apps but not yet utilised the gateway or web portal to report to the ICT Ministry in order for the EGA to put all applications in the GAC to facilitate access by the people to communicate at one place.

This would allow the public to easily access the services provided through these applications, he said.

So far 81 applications created by 18 government ministries and state agencies and an independent organisation have been put in the GAC.

The EGA is making its way towards better government IT infrastructure, exploring emerging technologies such as cloud computing and mobile development.

Its goal is for Thailand to offer universal government services online by 2015, allowing public access via any device around the clock.

The EGA is already playing an important role as technology adviser to state agencies while coordinating efforts among them.

All e-government services will be assessed this year while encouraging greater use of information technology and IT professionals in government agencies.

As a start, the EGA has introduced its first e-service the “national single window”, allowing people to access electronic data and share and integrate information among 35 state agencies and private organisations in the areas of import, export and logistics.

Led by the Customs Department, the national single window provides one-stop service for documentation procedures for exporters and importers. The system will reduce many time-consuming manual processes and cut transport costs for the current 125,000 exporters and importers in Thailand by at least US$3.2 billion annually.

Is the ICT Ministry going to help any of the others with basic standards/quality control? (I'm looking at you RTP Immigration division with your IE only forms and forms that suddenly break on a Sunday afternoon)
