Tawilwadee: CDC has yet to hold public hearing on the new charter

BANGKOK, 13 Mar 2015, (NNT) - One of the Constitution Drafting Committee members, Tawilwadee Bureekul, has stated that the committee has yet to decide if it would hold a public hearing on the new charter in the near future.

She said that her agency is upholding the rights of the people in voicing their opinions on the charter. Ms. Tawilwadee underlined that the existing draft can still be amended further.

According to her, this charter highlights the rights to vet the administration and legislation by means of impeachment. It also provides mechanism for public scrutiny, closes social gaps, and creates fairness and unity.

The new charter has 4 parts, with a total of 315 acts. At the moment the new constitution is being reviewed for possible amendment, refinement and overall clarification.

She also indicated that the drafting committee has yet to decide whether it would hold a public hearing in the near future, adding however that the forum gauging the public approval on the new charter would be organized.

What about a referendum ?

who cares... a public hearing, a referendum, ... nothing is going to make JuntaConstitution 2.0 more fair or democratic.

someday the people of Thailand will have to push aside the generals and take back the country for themselves.

What about a referendum ?

Going by the discontent, that I have read in the media.

From top officials, to people from various different parties, including yellow supporters.

It doesn't look like a referendum would pass.

If it did not pass, what would they do? Scrap it and start again?

If they want this constitution changed and signed to law.

They know already, probably not a good idea to have a referendum.

A nida poll perhaps ??

Precisely if there was a referendum it will show them and their ideas for what they are. But I believe that the junta will reject this constitution after a "public hearing" which will allow them under the interim constitution to fire the CDC and appoint a new CDC which will then take 2 years to draw up another constitution. When the US complain the junta will say the constitution wasn't acceptable to the people.

The Junta has already announced when the new constitution will become law - September 2015. The 2007 Constitution was passed in a public referendum by 51% to 47% and its was far simpler than the new draft. Obviously, there cannot be a public referendum. The Junta may have its rubberstamp NLA pass the Constitution into law to give it some false sense of legitimacy. It will be interesting to see if Thais will become obediant soldier-citizens for the new regime.

Since General happiness already has announced on which date the King will approve the new constitution, it should be very clear what his intention are regarding approval by the general public.

It should at the same time be clear that there will be some surprises in the new constitution, that he want to make sure are not rejected.

But he has offered to ban himself from being elected for, the below his status job, as senator.
