Talked with the same man many times, never any problem.
What were you chatting about? How many tickets has he handed out

Are u the reincarnation of Irish Ivan?

Just follow the rules, don't have ur attitude and all is ok. Really dont understand what your problem is with Farang Police assistance, tourist police and whatever person with a bit of authority,

On the other tread you proudly proclaim you tip (bribe) everybody, yet you always seem to hate this particular man? It's not you're Daddy is it? The man is just doing his job and he likes it. It is NOT up to you to decide how another person fill his live ambition.

And NO to answer your question we did not talk about fines because he never gave me 1. Following the rules is not hard to do.

Ok I have to tread lightly here. But my problem is that these guys pull over every farang. But never ever ever hassle Thais. Why is that? If they are cops then they shouldn't discriminate on skin colour
At that checkpoint everybody is stopped. IMO he should not be pulling people over though but limit himself to helping foreigners pulled over by the Thai cops. But it doesn't do any harm and he is assisting many foreigners there. He should start a course in Mandarin though.
He doesn't stop Thais, whenever a Thai national is driving a car he is noticeably quiet. With these types of people they want recognition, they want tourists to say "wow are you a cop in Thailand?" The expats and Thais see straight through them.

They are not cops, only provide assistance, if you're not happy with your treatment go to the appropriate authority and complain. To obtain an IDP in your own country for a m bike, your license needs to show you are permitted to ride one. The police I have had dealings with in Thailand have all said IDP is required, but some provenances accept DL from home country.

Sometimes they better understand the ISP, but it is not required by law.

Was stopped many times over the years and they accepted IDP, later on got a Thai license, like I said different provencies accept different things, even different cops will accept different licences.

I have no problem with the fine for not having a licence, because you didn't actually have one, but I am interested in the second fine he gave you. What was on the ticket?

A UK drivers licence is the Paper licence. This is commonly supplemented with the Plastic Card.

To legally drive overseas (i.e. In Thailand) an International Drivers Permit is also required to accompany the Paper licence or plastic card licence.

The Op did not have the correct documentation.

As a Tourist he can ride/drive with an IDP for up to 90 days.

Any longer than this he is deemed not to be a tourist and requires a local licence.

Your last paragraph.

So that would mean you need to carry your passport too.

Posted

Already confirmed by Thai Authorities, no need to carry passport.

So how will they know how long you've been in the country for?

Just to make myself clear, my post was in reply to the poster who said you can only use an IDP for no more than 90 days.

Attitude generally begets attitude if you treat someone like shit they will generally respond in kind. I was not there so have no idea who started it but once it became a yack yack fest you were never going to win.

OP so you had to pay 1,000 baht total? 500B for no license and 500B for talking back? i never had to pay for not having a license so don't know the fee, but the legal amount for speeding is 200B, did you get a receipt? Is this expat cop really taking bribes?

Posted

Forgetting the license charge, what was the actual offence which attracted the "talking back" fine?

Was it an on the spot fine? Did you get a receipt? Was it a demand for money with the threat of going to jail? Did you feel compelled to pay this.

Are you sure the guy was an Aussie and not that other well known, special forces, English stand over man who has been discussed here before?

Best thing to do is what I do. Ignore the farang volunteers entirely. They have no arrest powers or any authority other than translating. Speak to the real police, <removed>

Not correct. They are operating under direct supervision and instructions from Royal Thai police and can stop and fine people.

That checkpoint is above board with receipts issued BTW.

>>Surely these traffic BIB and their farang helper would be better occupied actually trying to improve the way people drive in Phuket, like driving on the correct side of the road, with helmets on, with a maximum of 2 on a bike, you know dangerous illegal things ?

That's the laugh of the day line. Police don't care about improving driving, they care about improving their bottom line.

More like improving the bulge their pockets

I'll just continue to ignore them and deal with the local police.

Last time I was asked for my licence by one I just walked straight past him and went to the real police. They can't do anything.

Anyone see the story about the Thai guy who ignored the checkpoint and rode on through, the policeman shot him in the head.

I used to ignore and evade, I reckon I will not anymore.

I don't think provocation is the right way to handle things you don't agree with, but up to you.

They have no arrest powers. Plenty of thai police there who can inspect my licence and tax sticker so I'm not fussed. I can just rattle off some German as if I don't understand English if he wants to be a cowboy.

Seems like the police servant has stepped up his game. 500b fine for talking back to him, LOL

Last time when I told him he was pathetic and that everybody was laughing at his power trip, including the real thai police, he got pissed off and tried to snatch off the motorbike keys. My wife was faster than him, scratched his hand in the process, and started to yak yak him.

His thai masters were quite amused at the situation, his face was so red I thought he was going to get an aneurism.

Seriously, I wonder who in his sane mind would spend his retirement days in a tropical island being the lackey of corrupt policemen who don't even respect him. He must be getting some kick out of the few tourists who think he has some kind of power and kowtow to him.

Didn't a couple of the TPV's arrest a Thai guy with a slow loris on Bangla Road a while ago?

From memory, it turned into a bit of a physical fight with him, but the arrest still stood. Also, from memory, they were not under the direct supervision of Thai Police at the time.

First off, Tourist haha Police have no 'authority'. None. They are merely to assist/interpret. Secondly, you really need to calm down coffee1.gif

I"all presume you mean tourist police volunteers. And they have nothing to do with this topic.

Some people just choose what they want to believe and ignore what they don't want to believe!

Seeing as many tourists rent motorbikes without a proper licence and with little aptitude about riding one, or much common sense, thereby putting themselves and, more importantly others, at risk, I applaud these checkpoints whoever is doing them.

Ahhh.....them were the days. They used to accept my Open Water PADI diver's card back then.

Times have changed and I now have a Thai driving license.

..............and anyway, you can circumvent this one by using the Home Steak rd. to Samakee two, or vice-versa if coming from Kata.

That's probably why they also set up further down the Kata road
