TCT: Annual tourism income could miss 2.2-trillion-baht target

BANGKOK, 25 March 2015 (NNT) – The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) has indicated that the confidence index of tourism operators is still at a normal level but admitted that this year’s tourism revenue could be lower than targeted due to economic slowdown.

TCT President Ittirit Kinglake cited a recent survey as showing that the tourism business confidence index for the first quarter of 2015 was at 99, comparable to that of the previous quarter. The stable confidence index suggested a stable tourism atmosphere in the country, with positive factors being the arrival of the high season, more effective public relations campaigns and economic revival.

For the second quarter, the confidence index is estimated at 101, still increasing but at a slower pace as it is hindered by operators’ worries about global economic uncertainties.

A total of 5.74 million foreign visitors are expected to come to Thailand during the second quarter, a year-on-year rise of 12.55 percent. For the entire year, Mr Ittirit projected that the tourist number will amount to nearly 28 million, a jump of 12.83 percent. Nonetheless, the revenue generated will likely be around 1.28 trillion baht, falling short of the target of 2.2 trillion baht.

The TCT President said the disappointing revenue is partly attributable to a huge shrinkage of the Russian market as a consequence of the economic recession in Russia. A drop of 52.11 percent is likely to be seen in the number of Russian tourists this year.

With the approaching Songkran holiday, Mr Ittirit anticipated a 44-billion-baht cash flow during the festive period, an increase of 12 percent compared to last year. However, he was concerned that the announcement of holiday extension would prompt Thai vacationers to turn to overseas destinations instead.

No surprise. The European/Australian goes to the ATM to withdraw what would be a considerable sum at home, only to find a few small denomination notes fluttering forlornly at the bottom of the tray... The exchange rates remain awful!

Surprised that they are surprised.

With the large -----on the coach, --------off the coach ------type tourists that the TAT is spending their advertising budget on it is

rather obvious is it not that spending per capita has gone through the floor, while costs for serving them have risen.

Until they get out of this quantity of numbers means everything mentality these results will never change

And from any complete different datas;

Before 2 days: nearly every tourist spending same amount per day,

never mind western, russian or CHINESE !

Sametime we hear even an increase of tourists by 12 % -

So, Hurra !!! 12% more income;

So sad information today: 52,1 % less russians are coming,

but over total an increase of 12,5% ( compensated by Chinese - propably )

EVEN the russians were only about a 25% of total tourists ,

It means the compensating CHINESE OH High so High Level Tourists bringing

increase in numbers by 12% ,

but bringing down the revenew from 2,2 trill to 1,2 trill -

an decrease over all from more than 45% !!!! minus 45% !! please read it twice !

That means what we always were thinking, they spend maybee 20% of that what other tourists

from West and East and everywhere spending;

(( Ok less expenses with chinese, they dont need toiuletts and no water for flash !! ))

Might I benefited of this,

my Hotel for songkhran reduced price for 50% for short time !!

( better 505 than 205 from Chi - even when safe flashing water ))

and on buffet some food will be left for the employees -

no, sorry, they take off their peace already on the opening of the buffet )

nothing to do with selling on the cheap, the rotten rice paid double market price with subsidies

nothing to do with the coup

nothing to do with the baht being artificilaly strong and europeans get 20% less baht for their euros
