BANGKOK: -- WITH the help of Laotian authorities, police yesterday apprehended a junior policeman accused of being involved in the murder of a revered Udon Thani-based monk earlier this month, national police chief General Somyot Poompanmuang said yesterday.

Senior Sgt-Major Charnchai Soisangwan was reportedly arrested in Bolikhamxay province in Laos, and was in the process of being handed over to Thai police as of press time. Escorted by police, he is scheduled to enter Thailand's Bueng Kan province at around 6pm, and would reach Udon Thani at 8pm, when he will be questioned by chief investigator - assistant police commander Lt-General Panya Mamen.

Charnchai, who is charged with assisting in a premeditated murder, is the key to finding out who is the mastermind behind the shooting of Phra Bundit Supanditto, the abbot of Wat Pa Tor Seesiad, on March 1, Somyot said at a press conference.

Somyot said no more information had been forthcoming on another person potentially involved in the crime after police named an Udon Thani businessman, identified only as Bor, as a possible suspect. He described a search of Bor's home on Wednesday as routine police duty following potential leads on his suspected role as the mastermind.

He said police were focused on the best lead - that the motive behind the murder was over one of the businessman's wives abandoning him and spending most of her time at the temple to observe Dharma.

Acting on information provided by the self-confessed gunman, Panja Chareesaen, police yesterday seized a pickup truck possibly used in the assassination at a home in Nong Bua Lamphu.

Originally painted white, the pickup has been spray painted black but the licence plates are the same.

A joint soldier-police search conducted yesterday at Charnchai's home in Phen district unearthed 59 game machines, which are possibly illegal.

Police yesterday conducted another re-enactment in Kumpawapi district where Panja alleged Charnchai handed him Bt30,000 before the shooting and Bt20,000 afterwards.

What's the pointing for this time ? " Yes that's Thailand over there "

It can't be about the scene of crime because if this picture was taken in Laos the locus of the crime was in Udon Thani.

If the picture isn't about the arrest why use it ?

BANGKOK: -- A team of top police officers today crossed the border to Laos to seek the e tradition of a police officer said to drive the gunman to shoot the abbot of Wat Pator Sisied temple.

The police driver identified as Sgt Charnchai Soisangwan was arrested by Laotian police yesterday and was detained at Paksane police station, opposite Thailand’s Bung Karn town.

The team, led by Royal Thai Police inspector general Pol Lt Gen Such at Thirasawat took, a boat ride from Bung Karn to Paksane this morning after Laotian police reported that they have apprehended the fleeing Thai police officer.

According to Laotian police, Pol Sgt Charnchai would be charged with illegal entry.

He would be taken to the court for trial first before extradition could be proces

It was not yet known if the process would take time or not, but the police team is now in Paksane to seek his return to Thailand.

A senior police officer said the officer Pol Sgt Charnchai Soithong is a key suspect to link the shooting of the abbot, Phra Bandhit Subandhitto, to the hirer.

Charnchai was implicated by the gunman Panja Chalisen, 49, to be the man who drove him to shoot the abbot, and was paid 50,000 baht for the job.

Aek Udon hospital executive chairman Mr Bancherd Chatphaitoon was implicated as a mastermind of the murder of Phra Bandhit Subandhitto.

Earlier yesterday a 100-strong combined force of commando police from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), Fourth Region Provincial Police, and soldiers searched the hospital and Bancherd’s office at the hospital.

But Mr Bancherd was not in. His wife said he was on a business trip in the province.

The search camev after CSD police were able to capture the suspected gunman identified as Panja Chalisen, 49, in Kalasin province.

The man was an employee of the Vocational Education Commission Kalasin office.

The gunman’s confession led the police to hunt for Sgt Charnchai who drove for him to shoot the abbot.

Panja said he was paid 50,000 baht by Charnchai.

Another team of commando police from the CSD and Fourth Region Provincial Police and soldiers also searched the house of Sgt Charnchai Soisangwarn to search for evidence linked to the murder.

He was not in but only his 76-year-old father.

A 22 rifle mounted with telescope, several rounds of .22, .357 rounds of ammunition were seized.

But the father told police that all belonged to his son and didn’t know when he left them at the house.

The police sergeant was said to be the person who drove the gunman to shoot the abbot. He then drove the car to a sawmill and hide it there until the police raided the mill and seized the car.

The mill owner told police he knew the officer but did not know the car left at his mill was used in the shooting.

Good reporting as usual, a junior policeman with a rank of Senior Sgt-Major - so what constitutes a senior policeman?

A Junior Sgt-Major, perhaps constitutes the rank of a senior policeman? This is the Twilight Zone, I mean Thailand after all. thumbsup.gif
