Buddhists plan 'mass prayer' event at Royal Plaza
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- At least seven Buddhist organisations will join a "mass prayer" at Bangkok's Royal Plaza on Tuesday to call for more religious protection, according to the Association of Scholars for Buddhism (ASB).

In a statement issued yesterday, the organisation said the event was required because the National Reform Council (NRC) had ill-intentions towards the Thai Sangha Council. It claimed that was underscored by the NRC meeting last week that tabled tarnishing information against the council.

The ASB said the mass prayer starting at 2pm would be an auspicious occasion for the country and encourage the government to always protect Buddhism and ecclesiastical regions.

Acting ASB president Sathien Wipornmaha said so far six other Buddhist organisations had agreed to join the event. They are the Buddhism Protection Centre of Thailand; the Pali and Dhamma Graduates Association of Thailand; the Association of Distinguished Contributors to Buddhism of Thailand; the Centre for Promotion of Buddhism; the Level 9 Pali Scholars' Association; and the Network of Buddhists in Europe.

He said they would gather under the banner "The Network of Buddhists of Thailand", with Sathien the co-ordinator.

Buddhism, and especially monks, do seem to get more protection than is deserved and now so many are in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons they're crying foul.

Interesting dilemma for the PM as this will be a direct protest against the junta and that's supposedly not on.

Bin martial law and get Article 44 in place and do it AT THE DOUBLE, move yourself, move yourself.

Please don't report any bad news about us and stop investigating.

The ordinary locals view all monks as if they are the same as the best one.

I view them all as being exactly the same as the worst one, it isn't right, but it is proving to be more accurate.

I can already hear the chants:

Oh Lord!! Keep nosy accountants out of our business.

Oh Lord!! Don't touch our license to cheat the sheeps.

Oh Lord!! Give me a Mercedes Benz. (sorry Janis)

Since Lord Buddha was a human and not a God, just who/what are they praying to? In my studies of Buddhism, which is a philosophy of how to lead a good life, there is no teaching in the Tipitaka of a Deity. It is possible they are praying to Hindu Gods but that is not technically what Buddhist monks are supposed to be about. This sounds like a public relations move to me and their call for more religious protection should be honored but not confused with protection of criminal behavior. You can't hide your criminality behind your religiosity. It is sad to witness the depths of criminality that has seeped into their daily lives that they now consider their behavior the 'norm' and 'righteous' and would have us believe they are ALL pure.

Personal beliefs are often more pure than the organized and corrupt institutions that supposedly represent the masses.

This is not about protecting Buddhism. This is about Buddhist monks in Thailand not being accountable to anyone. That is they can collect and use money without having to account for it. Untaxed income and the scope for money laundering.

You hit nail right on the head! Been watching it for years.... clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifgiggle.gif
