Abhisit apologises for remarks by Bangkok governor
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- DEMOCRAT Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva apologised Tuesday for what Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said after flooding hit the capital last week, saying he believed the governor had no intention to hurt people's feelings when reacting to the drama.

"I believe that the Bangkok Governor did not have any intention to cause discontent among people," Abhisit said on the party's official Facebook page.

"As leader of the Democrat Party that fielded Sukhumbhand in the Bangkok election, I would like to apologise for what the governor said that may have made many people unhappy," he said.

Sukhumbhand held a press conference last week after the flooding, caused by an unseasonal downpour. His comments came after a reporter asked about the flood scenario in the future.

"I am not an angel who can predict that [the weather]. I would be willing to answer if I were one," Sukhumbhand said.

The Democrat Party leader expressed his apology in a reconciliatory manner, saying the governor lost his temper due to stress caused by the situation.

"I am not an angel who can predict that [the weather]. I would be willing to answer if I were one," Sukhumbhand said. Well he said it, not Abhi, and the apology should come from him.

Quite right but it's a big ask, too much face involved and VIPs don't usually do apologies.

Also to often apologies are linked with blame and responsibility, and many don't accept those either.

Abhisit is being the statesman, but did he tell Sukhumbhand beforehand that he would be making an apology for what Sukhumbhand said?

Minor royalty are loathed to apologise to commoners.

Besides, the Angel remark was not the worst - Sukhumbhand told Bangkok residents to go and live on a mountain if they do not want to be flooded!

Abhisit was supposed to implement the 2006/07 Flood Mitigation Program.

This was taken over by the PTP Flood Mitigation Program which still has to see the light of day.

It should be the Governor who should be apologising...

That's Abhisit's problem he is too much an English Gentleman for Thainess.

Apologize for what? He isn't an angel (thepi). He can't predict the weather. Why should anybody's feelings be hurt? One of the things I like about M.R. Sukhumband is that he speaks frankly and honestly. He's the best governor Bangkok has had since that one with the "worker ants" thing.

He did? W\ell, good for him. It's going to get a lot worse with rising sea levels. The people complaining about last weeks flash floods are just spoiled. We used to have them a dozen times a year. I think it was Samak who implemented the last big project, but I would be happy to be corrected. It was someone more recent than Chamlong or Thaksin (who promised to solve the traffic problem within six months, another thing for our yellow shirts to bitch about). I'm glad to see him speaking some plain common sense. I think that's why he's so popular with most people, despite the pearl clutching by his effete critics.

Sorry…A word not often heard coming from the mouths of Thai politicians. A word that embraces responsibility for your actions.

A word the farmers no doubt yearn as well.

From what I have observed in Pattaya, the problem is not caused by the rain but by the complete inability of the city engineers to install a storm drainage system that follows normal design requirements. Just putting a pipe in the ground is NOT enough :)

And Samak, Somchai and Yirgluck weren't ? wink.png

Ricardo, the obvious is the starting point. Abhisit was responsible. It was on his watch to begin a program that was costed at circa $350 million dollars developed by Thai mitigation expert.

Not sure if Samak or Somchai were around long enough to look at the report? Unless you have research to prove they were?

Abhisit was around long enough to work with the then Governor of Bangkok to begin implementation of the program until some people objected to the mitigation program. There were also suggestions that people were paying off, not to have the program as it would affect the ambience of their business.

Yingluck was hit with the floods at the beginning of her tenure. But yeah she should have done something.

My point is that Abhisit as head of the Government also needs to be apologising to the Thai people.

I suggest that you bookmark this link and then read and try to understand who came where, when and for how long in the line of PMs of Thailand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Prime_Ministers_of_Thailand

Having read your homework on Thai PMs then go to this link and find out when the flood prevention programs started.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premiership_of_Abhisit_Vejjajiva

When you have done that go back to the PMs link and work out how long Abhisit was the PM for after that period.

Then come back and look at your post for errors.

Have a nice day.

Facts were never their strongest point...

Beliefs…..Well that's another story.
