The highlight of the week is the Pride parade through the streets of Patong.

PHUKET: -- Phuket Pride, the island’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) festival kicks off on Sunday April 19 with “Stargazer”, Phuket Pride’s first talent contest.

The competition starts at 4pm at CC’s Hideaway in Kata. Auditions will begin at 5pm and the finals at 8pm, with a prize of B20,000 for the winner.

Entry to the event is free, or people can make a donation of B100 and receive a free beer or cocktail and a draw ticket. Anyone wanting to enter the competition should email [email protected]

The following day (April 20) will see cue experts line up for the pool competition at Sundowners Bar. Spectating is free but competitors must pay an entry fee of B300 for the chance of winning cash prizes. Entry forms are available at Aquarius Guest House/Lounge 69.

In the evening, Newspaper Restaurant in Soi Paradise is open for a three-course Thai meal with entertainment. Tickets, from Newspaper, or Aquarius Guest House/Lounge 69, cost B800, B200 of which will go to the Phuket Loves You Club (PLU) for its outreach programme.

On April 21, there will be a gay day trip to Koh Racha. The trip would usually cost B2,400 but the ‘Phuket Pride week special’ price of just B1,200 includes round-trip transfers, mask, snorkel (fins extra) life jacket, soft drinks on board, tour guide, insurance and Thai buffet lunch. The following day the action switches to the beach at the end of Bangla Rd, where team will vie for victory in a beach volleyball tournament. The entrance fee per team is B1,000. Winners will receive cash prizes and trophies, plus free entrance to the Boat Bar ‘Sunset Beach Party’ in the evening.

The Sunset Beach Party will be held at Iguana Beach from 5pm to 10pm and for the entry fee of B300 will feature DJ music, neon dancers, the Boat Bar show and more. Limited free transport will be available from the Novotel Vintage Park at 5 and 5:30pm, return from party at 9:30, 10 and 10:30pm. Thai and International food will be available (at extra cost).

On April 23 the action moves to Phuket Adventure mini golf in Cherng Talay. Entry to the competition costs B250 or B450 with transfers from/to Patong. Mini-buses will leave Paradise at midday. In the evening put on all your finery and head for the Beautiful woman/Sexy man contest at CC’s Hideaway, from 6pm to 11pm.

Contestants “will come out as their favourite woman and throughout the night slowly transition into a sexy man”. There will be cash prizes for the winners.

The evening also includes a cabaret show from Phuket. Entry to watch costs B200. A Thai buffet meal will be available at B250.

Friday April 24 will be an evening for dressing one’s finest for the Gala Diner, including a Grand Charity Auction at the Novotel Vintage Park from 6pm to 11pm.

The evening will include a Thai and International buffet, a “world famous” cabaret show, guest DJs and entertainers and a special recognition award ceremony.

There are a limited number of VIP tables at B2,000 per person. Regular Gala tickets at B1,500 can be bought individually or in tables of 10.

The biggest party of the week will be on Saturday April 25: The Big Event, including a ‘Mr. Phuket Pride 2015’ contest, and the Andaman Embrace Resort from 4.30pm to 10.30pm.

The event starts as a pool party, with a swim-up bar with DJs from some of Phuket’s top nightspots and Beach clubs, dancing and entertainment including saxophonist and bongo players.

A BBQ and other food will be available (at extra cost).

The ‘Mr Phuket Pride 2015’ contest will be two rounds of the boys in day wear and swim wear, with cash prizes for winners.

Rhythm and blues, jazz, and funk singer PJae Stanley will sing between the two rounds.

Entry is free or partygoers can buy a welcome pack at B200 which includes a free beer, a garland ready to give to your favourite Mr Phuket Pride 2015 contestant and a free Donate & Win (DAW) ticket.

The week reaches its climax ith that prennial favourite, the Phuket Pride Grand Parade, an outrageously colourful beginning at 3pm on Soi Tan and proceeding along Prachanukroh Rd and the beach road.

Aftre the parade is over, the fun begins with a street party on Soi Paradise including a Tea Dance and BBQ at Kiss Club and Bistro Restaurant, and the draw for holders of Donate And Win tickets.

In addition to the daily events, all through the week there will be a photography exhibition at Jungceylon titled “All love is equal”. Entry is free. Anyone who wishes to submit a photo may do so by sending high-resolution JPG images to [email protected]
