Salt water swimming pool - for less than 1 Million possible?

Recommended Posts

Posted

we are considering building a salt water pool in our garden. The pool size should be 12 x 5 x 1.70. Build in proper way as a tiled pool. However all quotations by big companies end with a price around 1 Million (750-1.100, depends on where to buy equipment, brands, pool tiles, ) including a pool house for all installations (automatic salt chlorinator, under water LEDs)

Why is it so expensive?

And are there other options in CHIANG MAI?

Are there other recommended groups for building? (maybe without website, so not known to everybody)

Serious answers appreciated

Thank you

Sounds about right. A 100 cu.m pool is a big installation. A lot of concrete a lot of tiling and 0.15 million baht of equipment (which is more expensive than falangland, due to import duties).

Go cheap in haste, repent at leisure. There will be plenty come on here (particularly if a moderator MOVES IT TO THE SWIMMING POOL FORUM)* who will nay-

say me. Find a few who have said a few years ago that they built their sizeable pool for 400k, PM them and see if they are still happy. Loads of grotty pools in Thailand inherited by house renters / s/h home buyers. Who built those?

Essential you use a builder whose work you can verify by talking to their owner.

* well done CharlieH you beat me to it. It switched when I pressed 'post'

Hi, you say it is expensive based on what? Costs in other countries? Research here in Thailand? or just what you hoped it would be...?

  • Hmmm to save on cost you could make it smaller...no one wants to make anything smaller in my opinion but they still want a lagoon/palace for peanuts.
  • You could save on concrete - wall thickness and quality and moisture barrier
  • You could save by not putting the larger size re bar in the walls, or better yet, just dont use any...
  • You could go with a fiberglass liner but will lose on lengevity....
  • You could do it properly with a good builder with a good background and recommendations and have something that will last a longgggggggg time....

2 pennies worth for you...good luck...

There's a popular, reputable company where I live advertising 'end of summer' specials on the radio - B575k for a concrete pool, fully installed.

But I live in one of those nanny state countries, where labour is expensive and development regulations are onerous.

Oh, wait... biggrin.png

Thats a v big pool. I am about to build a pool and had originally planned a large rectangle pool like yourself. I have since traveled around a bit and seen a few pools and re-evaluated what I want it for. I am now going for a 12 m X 2.5m lap pool @ 1.6 with an additional area 3x4 m @1.2 wit a seating area and steps at one end. I am importing my Australian pump filter and auto chlorinator direct from the China manufacturer (daveypool.com) for half the cost of buying it here (cost is just over 1k US). Davey is a long established Australian pump company. It is being delivered customs cleared and in fact I got a call today that it has arrived in Bangkok early. Its taken around 3 weeks and will be delivered after Songkran . My builder is bringing in a pool specialist and I will buy the materials. Quoted Labour cost 6k baht/sq mtr. Concrete and steel are cheap here so do not skimp and ensure you use quality materials especially grout, sealant and tiles. For me 500-600k seems realistic

That's a b-s price.

If you were allowed you could build your own pool for under 250k.

It's not a bleeding luxury house you're building, is it?

Cheap in the short run is very often expensive in the long run. The last thing I want is a "cheap" swimming pool.

Sorry but you are wrong. Just the equipment (chlorinator, pump, electrical work and filter) will be B 200 k. I have a similar size pool, with chlorinator etc etc and that cost B 600 K about 8 years ago. To give you an idea of costs, proper LED underwater light are around B 10 000 each, x 4 = B 40 000 just on LED lights.

Make sure you really want a pool- non stop effort to keep in tip top condition.

Don't go cheap, always buy the very best - that really applies to any purchase. It will work out cheaper in the long run.

Pools are great for kids and tourists- and they certainly look nice- have never actually been in mine yet- mind you is getting a bit a hot and might go for a dip one day.

My pool which is 55 square meters was originally salt water but got fed up with the Chinese made Monarch Chloromatic breaking down I now use the basic chlorine which is trouble free.

The pool is now 9 years old and although I used the best materials possible the tiles have been falling off for the last 6 years due to bad workmanship.

One quote for re tiling is B.255.000 !!

I've checked out the price of tiles per square meter which comes out at B.800 and thats for basic tiles nothing fancy.

I am a builder (not in CM)

For the price there is one very important thing that you didn't say, do you want an overflow or skimmer pool?

Price for a quality pool is around 14-15000b/m2 with hayward superpump 2hp and hayward salt chlorinator. I use those for 10 years.

Add 2000b/m2 for an overflow pool.

Add 80-100000 to include a jacuzzi in your pool.

3 important points to check during construction :

- density of steel : SD30 in 16mm looks the same as SD40 but is really cheaper

- concrete : should use 250ksc density and not cheap 180ksc....

- use of rubber waterstop between the slab and the walls

LED underwater lights you can buy in GLOBAL far cheaper...

Obviously something wrong with your cheap price........had you used a "quality" chlorinator and good after market products...........everything would have been ok!!!

Building a pool rules .....for me anyway............inground pools ..check the engineers design...........go up a grade in rebar, concrete and plaster..........

Make sure pumps, filters and chlorinators (if used), are all the best available and IMO, it's better to upgrade..........this equipment is cheap in reality.....don't go cheap!

Use good tiles..glass or ceramic.......use the best adhesives available and ensure good for underwater use.............do not paint pools....the paint here is crap.....whether chlorinated rubber or epoxy........unless you can obtain good quality products...with a guarantee....do not paint!

Where did you get your Zodiac Tri large pH chlorinator for that price? My Zodiac Tri medium pH chlorinator needs replacing and the best price i can find so far is around 60,000 baht. Even replacing the chlorine cell is about 30,000 baht.

You see a lot of 250k pools that people paid 500 k for in housing estates. After about 5 years they ALL need major repairs and the same useless pool repairers are back charging ridiculous prices to do another crap job.

I am relying on a pool specialist being brought in by my builder BUT my builder has not let me down as yet. Guess I will know for sure in about 5 years but I will be there every day and monitor what is going on. I have found from building my house a bit of common sense and plenty of polite questions go a long way to getting a quality job. My gf also has a bit of practical experience with pools and I know she will want to know whats going on also. Guarantees mean nothing in Thailand

Do you mean m2 or cbm?

Anyway it's more than 1.3 Mill, isn't it?

m2 = square meter

if your pool is 12x5=60m2

60x15000= 900000 B

So around 1M if jacuzzi included

more 100K if overflow.

Allowed? Surely you do know about Thai laws when it comes to labor?

Haven't you heard about the guy in Kamala, Phuket who was disgusted by the dirty toilets close to the beach, so he took upon himself to make them clean, and became arrested and deported because he didn't have a work permit for it?

Read up on the law on what foreign workers can do or not and you you will find out that if you don't have any work permit, you can't even play your guitar in public. It's not recreational. cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Just to say I built my pool using our house builders, best 4 inch thick tiles, salt, weber grouting, only 1.20 meters deep, 6 years old now still looks very good, used in our small resort 700 k including 2 meter walk around, with small pump house, he charged 200 k labour.
