The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet has approved the proposed construction of three motorways designed to alleviate traffic problems during long holidays, deputy spokesperson at the PM's Office Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd disclosed yesterday.

The motorways, slated |to be completed in three |years, are a 196-kilometre motorway from Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district to Nakhon Ratchasima via Saraburi; a 96-km motorway from Nonthaburi's Bang Yai district to Kanchanaburi; and a 32-km motorway from Pattaya to Map Ta Phut.

Sansern said the Cabinet hoped the Bang Pa-in-Nakhon Ratchasima route, running parallel with Mittraphap Road, would ease the notoriously bad traffic heading Northeast during Songkran.

Well let's hope that the road surface lasts longer than that of the " super highway " ( Asian highway 32 and 1 ).

Bangkok:- In about three years, tourists will find it much faster to drive to their destinations in the North and Northeast as the Cabinet has approved a motorway that will be an important alternative route to the regions.
Deputy Government Spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the Cabinet approved the construction of the 196-kilometer-long Bang Pa-in-Saraburi-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
It was approved along with two other motorways – Bang Yai-Ban Pong-Kanchanauri motorway, which will be 96 kilometers long, and 32-km-long Pattaya Map Ta Phut motorway, Sansern said.
He said the Cabinet gave the green light for the construction because the three motorways can greatly reduce outbound traffic congestions during long public holidays.
In particular, the Bang Pa-in-Saraburi-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway will help reduce traffic congestion on the Mittraparp Road during weekends and long public holidays.
The Mittraparp Road is notorious for traffic congestion especially at the uphill road in Tambon Tabkwang in Saraburi’s Kaeng Khoi district. During long public holidays, the spot often became a bottleneck, causing traffic to accumulate for over 30 kilometers long.
“Since the Bang Pa-in-Saraburi-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway will run parallel to the Mittraparp Road to the Northeast, which is always congested, the new motorway will help motorists save time and it will reduce the congestion on the road greatly,” Sansern said.
He said the construction will take about three years to be completed.
Earlier, the Highway Department said the land expropriation of the Pattaya-Map Ta Phut route will begin this year and the construction will be done in 2018.

excellent news....well done cabinet...if anything will revive the economy spending in infrastructure might, and if it doesn't then at least we'll have nice roads.

So, 196 kilometers in 3 years (1095 days), that's one thousand meters per 5.8 days (140 hours approx). Working 24/7 that's 7 metres an hour of four lane motorway.....in your dreams.

Even if they start tomorrow it wont be completed in my time.

Saraburi is a major production area for cement so those Cabinet members with shares in the cement companies will be smiling.....

Building the road surface is the easy part. You analysis of that is so flawed by a simplistic methodology that has no basis in the way that roads of this scale are built that it does not warrant any further comment.

What normally takes the time is the planning (especially given the political inputs at local levels to ensure that maximum returns are generated for those with influencefacepalm.gif ). Addition the generation of any impact statements (economic, environmental, social and heritage) and the wiliness of the government and authorities to override in the "National Interest"sad.png I don't know where these processes is up to in relation of the 3 projects - perhaps some one better informed could tell us.

Cement companies shareholdings are the least of my concerns. Routing and land appropriations are way higher of my list - maybe attaching a DSI and Amlo unit to the projects may save the government money by not having to compensate land holder for encroached and variously corruptly acquired land.cheesy.gif

Lastly I am sorry to hear that you have a poor health prognosis that will preclude you from seeing the (eventual) completion of these projects - I offer you my sympathy and wish that you health improves to extend you life span so that you may drive on the road in person.smile.pngsmile.png

If the quality of the build/materials is anything like the 'new' Jomtien 2nd road, the proposed motorways will be in urgent need of repair in less than 1/3rd the time it takes to complete them. Could end up being a bit like painting the Forth Bridge in Scotland!
