The Ministry of Public Health warns drinkers of alcohol withdrawal effects after Songkran

BANGKOK, 16 April 2015, (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has expressed concerns over the effects of alcohol withdrawal after Songkran celebrations, advising drinkers to rest, and refrain from drinking energy drinks and from driving.

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Ratchata Ratchatanawin, yesterday revealed that a lot of Thais suffer from the effects of alcohol withdrawal after the long Songkran holidays. He explained that, for the next 2-3 days after they stop drinking, revelers would suffer from fatigue, frustration, and anxiety attacks.

The minister said hallucination, shaking, sweating, and body shock, are the more common symptoms in severe cases.

Dr. Ratchata indicated that the reason drinkers may feel weaker after they stop drinking is because they usually forego eating prior to a drinking session, causing a nutritional deficiency. He said the best way to treat the symptoms is simply resting and consuming, fruit, vegetables and drinks containing sugar.

He said the patients should stay away from energy drinks because they would stimulate their nervous system when what it needs is rest. The minister also strongly suggests those withdrawing from excessive alcohol intake, refrain from driving, in order to prevent accidents resulting from driver fatigue.

It's called a hangover doc.

We all get them, not just Thais.

You really didn't listen carefully to the good doctor did you? - he made it quite clear that, unlike foreigners,Thais do not get hangovers, they merely "suffer from fatigue, frustration and anxiety attacks"...............same, same, but different.

How much alcohol must one drink in order to obtain the hallucination effect. I usually see double but never hallucinate.

WhY does ministry think they would be stopping or started just for songkran?

Why not simply withdraw the withdrawal? No symptoms at all....laugh.png

Thailand's doctors a years behind the rest of the world. What an ignorant thing to say, probably due to the fact that the top doctors, with their heads so far up their <deleted>, refuse to say that alcoholism is a disease and that they don't know how to cure it.

Only alcoholics(not heavy drinkers) get DTs and withdrawals from alcohol.

One of the best descriptions I have heard of this condition is "A few tiles loose on re-entry" (the space shuttle for those who don't get it).

it's called a hangover

get over it...

That is an informed Minister....good on him.

And exactly when would they go through alcohol withdrawal? This is a joke right. Is there ever a time alcohol is not present in their system they never stop drinking on a daily basis?

And what about withdrawal effects in soi 6 Pattaya.

Does he really think that they will stop drinking after songkran?

Agree completely - avoid hangovers, stay drunk.

it's called a hangover

get over it...

No its not! Its called Changover.

Easy solution, drink more!

Doc. Chang

Saw topic title, knew it would be laughable content.

Any minister or ministry would make great stand up comedians if they weren't so dangerous with their misinformation.

Another quality remark from the higher ups in Thai society.....open mouth, insert left foot.

Let me guess, Dr. Ratchata Ratchatanawin has not been drinking a single drop of alcohol during his whole life...

Seriously, Doc?

Nothing else to do?

Bunch of quitters! No withdrawal effects if you don't start, or for that matter quitw00t.gif

I hear people talking about Thais being big drinkers but I find that compared to back in Australia where the vast majority of people I know are very heavy drinkers, most Thais I know either don't drink at all, or just drink socially.

It seems that compared to myself and what I am used to the Thais are very light drinkers.
