The Songkran Seven Days of Danger came to a close at midnight on Wednesday. The week-long celebrations claimed the lives of 364 people, but Phuket closed out the celebrations with zero deaths on record. In total, 3,559 people were injured during the festivities.

Suthee Markboon, the Deputy Minister of Interior, announced on Thursday morning that the Road Safety Directing Centre recorded 364 deaths total and 3,559 injuries during the seven-day campaign.

Despite efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities, the 2015 festival saw more accidents, injuries and deaths than the 2014 festival. The Surin province had the highest number of fatalities, with 16 deaths. The final day of Songkran (April 15), officials recorded 458 accidents that caused 489 injuries and 58 deaths.

Drunk driving was the main cause of accidents (39%), but speeding was a major cause as well (24%). More than 80% of the accidents involved a motorcycle.

Phuket reported no deaths this year, which was a major improvement over the 22 deaths that occurred during last year’s festival. While there were no fatalities, Phuket still recorded 57 accidents and 58 injuries during the holiday. The number of accidents increased this year by 159%.

Police stopped a total of 18,530 vehicles during Songkran and cited 3,908 people for traffic offences.
