Suicides always leave questions in their wake. My best wishes for the spirit of the fellow....

I wonder if it's coincidence that I was asking myself, just this afternoon, if a thread on farang men in midlife crisis would be beneficial to this forum community.

I don't recall ever hearing the topic in casual conversations here, nor do I recall seeing a thread on any forums relating to Thailand about it, but all the same, I can not help but think that many men here are chasing illusions of youth and the loss of their vitality.

cant read the story of course in thai.

was it one those suicides where the person shoots himself once in the heart then twice in the head,

before placing the gun on a table and then lie down on the floor to die?

So cynical, Mr Lamai.

My sympathies and condolences to friends and family. I hope this story gets posted in English as to what happened exactly.

many make the long journey to this human jungle, hoping to find salvation. instead they get the horror, the horror.

maybe they were already lost to the world to begin with.

i dont know, its sad.

Pretty much spot on, the dude.

There's certainly a 'land's end' aspect to Bangkok for a great many of the foreigners who are drawn here. San Francisco has always had a high suicide rate forexactly the same reason.

People head west, literally or metaphorically, seeking salvation for wasted lives. When all they find there is pretty much the same thing they thought they had left behind, they go off the end of the pier.

RIP

If they DO make it through Bangkok, then there is an extension that leads to the end of the line ... Sihanoukville, Cambodia ... the elephants graveyard .......!

I've never had the slightest indication to go there, but now you have me intrigued. A worse end-of-the-line hole than Bangkok or even (shudder) Pattaya? Man, I got to see that.

Its worse Old Asia ... trust me ... far worse ... and if curiosity gets the better of you just make sure that youve got the return ticket in your hand .......!

You call yourself "Old Asia Hand" yet reckon that Bangkok or Pattaya are as bad as it gets? Methinks a change of handle is in order, 'cause they don't even begin to rate on the list of desperate Asian shyteholes in which a man could lose himself. Sometimes that anti-Thai chip on your shoulder seems so big it's impossible for you to see around it.

People get depressed and commit suicide all over the world. At least in Bangkok you can find what you need to make your last night pleasurable and a balcony high enough to do the job.

briefly ;

edward lawrence sperry , a 43 y.o. american , was found dead in his rented room at bright city tower , sukhumvit soi 11.

no evidence of foul play was discovered by the police. he committed suicide by putting a white plastic bag over his head , one of those garbage bags that you can tie closed , and he tied it around his neck.

he was found lying on his bed wearing a blue t shirt and long brown trousers.

doctor said he had been dead for 6 to 8 hours when found.

he left a "goodbye note" , citing various disappointments in his life , parents , family etc.

his passport showed that this was his second trip to thailand as a tourist.

the names of the policemen , and details of how the body was discovered are also given.

all in all its a very sad and depressing tale.

why is it that everyone assumes that this suicide was a depressing event. it is highly likely that, for him, it was a truly liberating event.

life ends in death for all of us. the means by which we reach that end should be, and for him were, a matter of choice.

is it better that he exist in some state that he would consider worse than death than to face death itself?

Posted

i would think that the feelings endured of someone about to commit suicide would be as far from liberating as it is possible to be.

the heaviness of the despair that must have engulfed that poor man for days or weeks beforehand must have been terrible indeed.

Posted

How on earth can death be 'liberating'?

Jeez . . I dunno about you, but I'm fully expecting all the fun parts of my life (and some of the crappy bits too) to be severely restricted when i . . . . ummm . . . . die.

No money left and can't face going home? :o

aint that the truth

rip for the poor fellow

when younger i could never understand any one committng suicide, as you get older then you try to understand the problems facing some people and suicide then seems an option.

one case i know of personally the chap built up a good business over 25 years, good house happy children, then pop no business not his fault because of default from customers but bill bills and bills, lost his houise divorced no credit no bank account and still hounded for payments, that can send a man over the edge, imho

as was said in an earlier thread if your going to go out then your last couple of weeks spent in los sounds an option, and to face comming back home to the never ending problems may have been to much.

American man found dead at the Charoen Hotel, Udon Thani.

By Pimporn K (udonmap.com)

Published: August 6, 2006, 5:28 pm

At 1.30 PM, a Middle age American was found dead in room 521 of the Charoen Hotel in Udon Thani City. The police examined the room and found 5 open packets of sleeping pills and a letter to ask Thai officers help bury or cremate his dead body. But police want to testify his friends to find the reason why he wanted to end his life.

Mr. Mark Barluk, a 53 years old of New York, USA was found lying flat on his stomach without any clothes. A big plastic bags was next to his head, 3 bottles of water were opened on the table, 5 empty packets of sleeping pills and a further 2 large black plastic bags. There were no marks on the body or sign of any blood or foul play. The doctor said he died 8 hours before finding him.

Moreover his luggage, clothes, passport and a letter which was writen in English, were on the table, the letter read "Dear Thai Officers...I have killed myself by taking sleeping pills, don't contact my relations because I have nobody and please bury my body. Thank you" Police kept this letter to for further examination.

Miss Sonpean Pimpathee, a 32 years old housekeeper of the Charoen Hotel said that she called to this room at 1 PM but nobody answered then she used hotels key to get in to this room for cleaning but she found Mark dead.

Mark checked into Room 302 at 3.39 PM on August 2, 2006 when he arrived at the hotel with another American guy, but they checked into separate rooms. After that On August 3th, he changed to Room 521 at 11 AM.

First, police sumised that Mark might plan to use the plastic bags to clover his head but after he changed his mind and took sleeping pills. The police are still waiting for his friend give them a testimony.

And how would you arrive at that conclusion ??

Sounds like you have been reading too many "books" :D

if you were being held in a torture prison, then the executioners bullet would seem 'liberating'.

to some life is torture. it is not for me to judge another mans pain as being too great or too small.

Suicide may be "liberating" for the individual, but it is truly hel_l for the family and friends who are left behind to feel extremely guilty and wonder what they should/could have done to prevent this loss.

I certainly understand that depression can be torturous and that many suicidal people are in horrible pain, but this doesn't make it easier for their families and loved ones.

People who are terminally ill etc. may need to carefully prepare those around for what they are about to do so that people can know it wasn't their fault.

I had a good friend who killed herself some years back. She had had a bout with cancer and after her treatment etc, she had always said if she got it back she would kill herself. She did kill herself--only problem, she didn't let anyone know if her cancer had returned. Lots of people have suffered because maybe we failed to be good friends and help her with other problems (or maybe it was cancer). It would have been--and still would be--easier to deal with if I knew she had cancer.

i'm beginning to think we may need a thread on suicide, but i'll wait for someone else to initiate that

meanwhile...

that there is anguish and pain for those left behind is often true, but need not be always true.

as you state, if there is a free flow of information between those in need and those most directly effected then the pain for all concerned is diminished or eliminated. suicide is a personal choice. i advocate for it for those in need, but i also strongly urge anyone considering this as an option to consider those left behind. make your plans with love.

if the stigma of suicide as a cowardly act by desperate people is removed, and it is seen as as a personal end of life option, then it is easier to open a dialogue. as long as those in need think of themselves as something other than people with friends and loved ones who care for them, then they will continue to hide behind hotel room doors, throw themselves from condo balconies, and use poisons, guns, and gases to end their lives in manners that often leave a final gruesome image to those left behind.

better to see suicide as a viable end of life choice and discuss it with those you love. ask for their input and assistance, within the limits of the law and their own personal comfort level.

additionally, change the laws to allow loved ones to be present at the time of one's death without fear of persecution or prosecution.

we will all die. it seems to me that it is better to make a rational decision to be certain it is peaceful and painless rather than trust it will not be angonizingly painful or debilitating.

Each and every one of us has a right to be exactly who we are.

Atleast the guy left a note.

Though very briefly and not making the pain of loss more bearable, it's a big consolation for the family.

Some people can't face up to life's surprises and want to get out this way ... i got my own opinion about that, but hey, if that's what they want ...

RIP dude
