Trump's shambolic war of choice triggering anti-Americanism in Asean

Featured Replies

The Philippines has a greater vulnerable than Thailand but it seems to me it's only a matter of time until we see similar explicit demonstations of anti-Americanism in Thailand.

Even if the hostilities "end" very soon, the oil price shock is expected to persist for well over a year.

The hostility is justified but it certainly doesn't make like as an American abroad these days more and more politically awkward.

Make America Go Away

Yeah, a bus driver with 5 kids can barely make ends meet because of Trump.

If you have a low-paying occupation, maybe best not to have so many children.

Filipinos are pretty savvy regarding the United State's colonial past in their country, and my guess? The average Filipino/Filipina are probably not too happy with Trump, and by extension, the average American at the moment.

Here in Thailand? Different. The inhabitants of the LOS just are not that aware of what happens outside of Thailand. The problems that Trump has just created will more likely be blamed on their own government's actions or inactions in response. I'm really not worried about Thais suddenly developing a hatred toward Americans because of Trump. Anyway, I'm just as unhappy with Trump as they are if they actually get around to blaming the affects of Trump's actions in Iran on Trump, no less Americans in general.

More than a year. The damage to South Pars will take 2 year or more to fix.

And we hope that we don't wake up to the glorious headlines that Israel just did this 👇to Tehran. Although, I've no doubt that many members here probably want it, but they really are too stupid to see the follow on reaction on the rest of the nuclear arm world. If Iran gets nuked, the fallout drifts to (nuclear-armed) Pakistan, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwiat, KSA, Azerbaijan, Armenia, (nuclear-armed) Russia, (nuclear-armed) India.....Thailand....(nuclear-armed) China. You get my drift?

That's been part and parcel of US foreign policy as long as I've been alive: Create as much chaos as possible and wait for regime change. Except when the chaos is global economic chaos which also affects the US 🙄. Aren't the plebs suppose to "rise up and take their country back?" glare Well, keep you eyes on Australia. It just about to get real in that petrol-free island country of ex-prisoners & ex-gaolers. Taiwan too. Most of the world soon. US included. And when Western politician’s hatred of Russia and Russians meets gas & oil shortages - for the plebs of those countries??? Suddenly austerity trumps global politics. Then the common man is looking at the elites who hate Russia and refuse to buy Russian oil & gas, and yet who themselves suffer no austerity and are still driving and flying in private jets - then Mr. and Mrs. Commoners being to realize that their gas needs are more important than the elites' Geo-political hatreds.

Could be many years depending on how the war goes.

Yes the Philippines as a former American colony has a very different perspective.

But I think the risks in Thailand still.exist Leaders here will likely and not unreasonably deflect blame on them towards the outside especially if the war gets much worse and the economic damage to Thailand gets more severe.

Why only anti-amercanism ??

Israel started this and will continue even if the US stops.

It's not just Asean thing, this is a worldwide phenomenon. Trump is despised to an enormous degree around the world and the vast majority of people have no respect for this vicious and corrupt circus clown. I don't think that they will take it out on Americans in general. Often times someone will ask me where I come from, and the first thing I'll say is I'm an American but I despise my president, and people will laugh and say okay good, at least now we know that you're a reasonable person.

He is inflicting so much unnecessary hardship on nearly everybody in the world, of course he is despised.

Israelis were dislike here for many many years going back into the past for so many different reasons. For some reason the Thais have always had an affection for Americans, but though that affection may remain, the respect and envy won't.

We should refer to the massive inflation caused by this dumb and unnecessary war as the "Trump Tax".

Are you upset because the Chinese are the most exposed to the loss of Middle Eastern oil?

Keep your position in mind when China expands and gobbles up local islands and bullies the locals. You can rush in to save the day with your words.

"Trump's shambolic war of choice triggering anti-Americanism in Asean"

Just as nethanyahu's shambolic war is triggering anti-israeli sentiment around the world.

I worked and lived in the Philippines for 7 years and loved it. I travelled around the islands being an avid scuba diver with over 500 dives in the PI. I talked with many of the local populace and most seemed to really like Americans. After all, we liberated them from being slaves to the Spanish, taught them English which allowed their number one export to be manpower especially nurses. When I was there in the 80-90's, there was still an office open not too far from the US Embassy that was calling for US statehood for the PI. The PI was my second choice for retirement after Thailand but the difference in local food, no strong earthquakes, no super typhoons every year, no active volcanos but i still could live there easily I think anyway but it has been 30 years since I was there and a lot has changed I am sure. I also am on the local forum there and from comments of the users, life still seems to be about the same. Any complaints are about the same as those on this forum and on the European forum!

Yes of course most Filipino people are fond of American people. Basketball courts everywhere, etc. I think the place is stressed now and likely to get much worse though so this might not be the best time to be moving there (which is something I've considered). The USD to PHP rate recently hit 60 for the first time in history. OK that might be good for many expats, but no so great for the locals.

Anyway. it seems to me if China EVER wants to make a move on Taiwan now is the time. They would definitely win now with the US military concentrated elsewhere and not even clear that Trump would even help. So if they don't perhaps it indicates that of course they don't want to take over Taiwan but gradually with politics instead of guns.
