Authorities know the identity of Koh Samui bomb masterminds, ministers told

BANGKOK: -- THE AUTHORITIES know the identity of people behind the car bomb on Koh Samui but are waiting to see if more evidence comes to light, a source quoted Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan as saying yesterday.

There are networks of operatives and other people involved and the attack who had nothing to do with the insurgency in the far South, Prawit reportedly told a meeting of ministers working on a public relations plan to announce the Prayut Chan-o-cha government's achievements over its six months in office.

National police chief General Somyot Poompanmuang backed Prawit's comments, saying there was sufficient evidence against the masterminds of the attack but police were in no hurry to obtain court warrants for their arrest.

"Hurrying the case may result in the case being put at a disadvantage. Although we have obtained sufficient evidence, we are in no need to be in a hurry. We can wait until we are completely confident, before taking further action," he said.

But when pressed on whether there was sufficient evidence against the masterminds, Somyot said he could not answer that yet.

He also refused to say whether a group of politicians that travelled to Surat Thani, on the mainland across from Koh Samui, would be summoned for questioning. "That will be decided later by case investigators. I cannot answer that," he said.

Prayut had earlier called on the "South-based politicians in question" not to panic, saying that he had not named anyone and people not involved in the attack should not react or pre-emptively deny the allegation.

Police based in the far South are looking for another three vehicles seen in surveillance camera footage travelling with the silver Mazda truck used as the vehicular bomb.

They are a silver Honda Civic sedan, a white Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck and a four-door Isuzu D-Max pickup.

The three vehicles are believed to have returned to the strife-torn region and could possibly be made into car bombs for future attacks, a source said.

Yala police plan to summon a driver with a local administrative body that owned the Mazda used in the attack. He had reported it stolen.

Abdulrasah Dumedae has given inconsistent information on the theft of the vehicle in March and has not provided any information deemed useful by security authorities, according to a security source.

The court-approved summons for Abdulrasah is needed for further questioning after his seven days in military custody ended yesterday.

Three security guards employed by Central Festival yesterday underwent physical examinations at a civilian hospital to make sure they had not been abused physically while detained by the Army before they were to be handed over to police, said Maj-General Kuakool Innajak, the chief of the Surat Thani military district.

He said one of the three guards had suspect elements in his statement and police would continue questioning him, after their detention with the military ends next Tuesday.

Interpretation: We are informing the masterminds in advance that we know who they are in order for them to tie up all loose ends, transfer their wealth offshore and flee to an unknown country. After verification and we are completely confident this had beed done, futher action will be taken and arrest warrants will be issued.

Plus the usual statement about taking ' the necessary action ' to bring them back as with the fugitive ex-monk and so many others who are still happily living abroad.

Perhaps they need to negotiate with the mastermind before he is allowed to deny the allegations publicly or flee abroad.

The terms of the negotiation will determine the next step as to whether he is free to go, or is left to squirm before negotiating again.

Is it just me or did we get the same story from the Koh Tao murder investigation?

What police force on earth knows the identity of a terrorism suspect and doesn't detain them?

Either they have nothing and they are trying to scare the pigeons with this story, or they are willing to expose the general public to risks of further terrorist actions whilst they 'gather evidence'.

Whatever spin they put on this is wrong. Take him into custody and all his family and friends and interrogate the bejesus out of them all.

Sounds like this numbskull was stumbling and stuttering his way through and he doesn't even know where his arse is located.

"Hurrying the case may result in the case being put at a disadvantage."

TRANSLATION

Secret interrogations are not yielding confessions and more time is needed.

The "negotiations" for what price must be paid to allow their continued freedom is what is taking the time, not the interrogations.

Perhaps what the general means is nothing will be done until the script has been finalised, fully memorised and rehearsed.

If necessary it will include the fact that the main suspects have fled the country but they will be tracked down and brought back.

We know that LoS has an impeccable record on this.

British security services knew the identity of a considerable number of Irish nationalist terrorists. But it was decided not to detain them for reasons considered on greater benefit.

Here, they probably do know, but it's all down to a) the behind the scenes negotiations; B) assessing how they can gain the most: c) what the suspect might know and reveal if prosecuted that could hurt their side.

There seems to be a propensity here for allowing things to fade away, make a deal, etc.

After all we don't want HiSo dirty laundry washing in public view do we? Not for the view of the mass minions.

Or more like the dick who wrote it down, or the translator, or this article writer (may be one and the same, may not) cocked it up and it's yet another reporting error.

Does this mean they don't know, or cant arrest the said person(s)

It's rather the same case as Mr. T. they don't want them in court, too much dirt could float up in the wash so lets pretend we are doing our best and hope they have the gumption to flee the country while they can
