To get a non-b visa you will need a letter of approval for the work permit application.

A single entry non-b visa costs 2000 baht.

If in the northern part of the country Vientiane is the best choice. Penang if in the south. Both you apply the morning of one day and pick it up the next afternoon.

I would go Penang or Vientiane, certainly not KL.

The process is that you apply on day one in the morning and receive the passport back on day two in the afternoon.

Be advised you need a lot of documents, including a work permit approval letter besides the WP3 form from the labour office.

If they don't want loose time they must hire a lawyer with experience, else you might have to go twice to the embassy because something will be missing.

It is also possible to change the tourist visa into a b visa inside Thailand but I wouldn't even try that without someone who know how to do it.
