To pamper and to spoil.

Featured Replies

Hi all, I was just looking at the very good thai-language site (well done David), so please take note all posters planning to cut and paste an answer from that site.

What word would you use for someone who pampers their child and someone who spoils their child? The difference, as I see it, is to spoil a child is stronger, to pamper is to spoil a little bit and not a negative term in my opinion. However there are many words listed such as

บำเรอ

พะนอ

โอ๋

Which word is best, it is the term 'pamper' that I need most, if someone could say which word is closest to that I would be grateful.

I'd say ตามใจลูก or ตามใจลูกมากเกินไป

ตามใจลูก being pamper and ตามใจลูกมากเกินไป being spoil. Not sure what happened to the edit button...

Different meaning...

In what way?

You pamper your child - คุณตามใจลูก

A pampered child - ลูกที่ถูกตามใจ

Someone who pampers their child - คนที่ตามใจลูก

Maybe เอาใจ is more what you're looking for? Anyone with a better way of saying these phrases, please post!

After some discussion, a Thai friend claims that the meaning I am after can be found in the following sentence เขาโอ๋ลูกจนเกือบจะเสียคน which can be found on thai-language.com. Though others are welcome to say if they consider this to be a negative statement. My friend says it is only a little negative, which is what I was after.
