Army-owned land sought for mineral ores exploration

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Primary Industries and Mines is to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Defence Ministry next month to open up military-owned land for mineral ores exploration.

The department head, Mr Surapong Chiangthong, said today that initial geological survey showed good prospect of iron ores and quartz ores in army-owned areas in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Petchaburi, Suphan Buri and Lop Buri provinces.

Raw quartz ores worth 1,500 baht per tonne but will fetch 50,000 baht a tonne if extracted and turned into metal-grade quartz or 900,000 baht per tonne if developed into solar-grade quartz which is main ingredient for making solar cells.

There are currently two metal-grade quartz manufacturing factories. Solar-grade quartz factory is now under construction at Amata industrial estate at a cost of 50 billion baht. It is scheduled to be completed in two years. The factory will have the capacity to produce solar cells equivalent to 500 megawatts which will be enough to substitute solar cell imports.

Iron ores are mostly found in Lop Buri and they are of high quality, said Mr Surapong. The deposit in Lop Buri was estimated at between 80-90 million tonnes.

Army OWNS the land ???? How about the thai poeple own it ? or what ?

Most countries have reserve land assigned to the military. Sometimes huge tracts of land. The army is the caretaker of the land and seems to be saying that the factories under construction at Amata Industrial Estate can use this mineral. Nothing particularly unusual about is there? Military land surely is in the same category as Crown Lands.

I am sure area commanders just need a little incentive to see it that way. whistling.gif

I guess the armed forces don't quite see it this way......

There are deposits of a rare mineral along the Western edge of Thailand found only here and in China. I saw a report about it once, but have since forgotten the name of the mineral. Someone out there probably knows it right off...

".......since forgotten the name of the mineral."

There are many ores in Thailand apparently, some with very rich deposits.Gold diggers abound.
