Two Cambodian resort workers have told police they 'could not control themselves' after being charged with gang-raping a young Australian woman who had passed out on the beach during a party at the venue where they worked on Monday night.

The 22-year-old victim had fallen asleep on O’Chheuteal Beach after a party at the nearby Waikiki Beach Club in Sihanoukville, southwest Cambodia, when the men spotted her and carried her back to their rooms at the resort.

Cambodian media named the pair as Sarith Sethy, 22, and Kuoy Pov, 17.

Both men were charged on Thursday after the woman reported the incident to the Sihanoukville police.

'At about 11 pm, while the victim was feeling drunk, the suspects brought her [to their room] and raped her one by one. They were able to rape her in the club because they were waiters and live at the club,' Sarath Vichea, chief of Preah Sihanouk province’s technical and scientific police bureau, told Cambodia Daily.

Both men, who live and work at the resort, confessed to the rapes on Wednesday night after they were arrested.

Provincial serious crimes bureau chief Nhet Phoan said that Sethy confessed to raping the 22-year-old twice, and Pov admitted raping her once.

They claimed they could not control themselves.

'They raped her because they couldn’t control their feelings when they saw her sleeping alone on the beach,' Mr Phoan said.

An Australian Embassy spokesperson said that the rape charges had been brought to their attention, and were ready to offer assistance to the young woman.

'We are aware of reports of the alleged rape of an Australian woman in Sihanoukville earlier this week and stand ready to provide consular assistance,' the spokesperson said.

'We continue to advise Australian travelers to exercise normal safety precautions in Cambodia.'
