BANGKOK: -- Deputy police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaichinda has been appointed to take charge of investigating into suspected human trafficking gang responsible for smuggling Rohingya migrants into the country and hiding them at a camp bordering with Malaysia resulting to several deaths from illnesses or fatigue.

National police chief, Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung, said today that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had attached great importance to the Rohinya case and demanded a probe to find out whether any officials or influential figures were involved in the trafficking of the Rohingya people.

Meanwhile, two Rohingya survivors found at the border camp in Padang Besar told police that some Thais and Myanmar people were responsible for looking after the border camp.

Songkhla police, meanwhile, have ordered a stop of some 20 bodies dug out of graves at the camp for DNA and forensic tests before they are to be properly buried.

The Chularatchamontri’s Office has contacted the police in Songkhla of its wish to arrange for proper burial of the dead victims in accordance with the Islamic law.

Let the world apply sanctions. Then things will change. Because the only way to change things in Thailand. Is to take away there revenue. Al they do on any issue is talk.

Do you laugh or cry? What Prayut needs to do is to call upon the UN to bring in an investigation team independent from ANY Thai officials, police, army etc.

I don't understand. This country is OBSESSED with outward appearances i.e. "face" yet they do little or nothing to stop behavior/ tactics/ operating procedures/corruption that drastically tarnishes the image of The Kingdom of Thailand.

Track record for police is not that impressive to say it nicely. The UN needs to get involved here immediately, mr Prajuth.

The thai police has zero credibility so this "investigation" has zero credibility. I am just waiting for them to conclude that 1. There is no camp or that they all had a good time in camp but a few of them died of natural causes. Just waiting for the lies and excuses to start.

The UN WILL get involved and IF this gang were protected by thai officials, then the whole thing will get nasty.

The cover up is already in progress.

Illness or fatigue or maybe getting beaten to death or shot?

The UN will NOT be allowed getting involved! This tragic development makes the indictment of the two PhuketWan journalist even more scarry. One should re-read the original Reuters article.

Yep and probably a few committed suicide per the police report.
