extending on a non-B

Featured Replies

hi all,

here's my question. I have a work permit, and will quit my job next month. I will have to hand the permit back to my employer and it will be cancelled, but I have a stamp in my passport which says I'm ok to stay in the country until 20 July. As far as I understand it, that's all good. But I wanted to stay until the end of July.

Is it possible to go to immigration and extend for 7 or 30 days, like you can on a normal tourist visa, or should I do a border run and try to come back in on the 30 day exemption (I don't fancy this as my passport is already full of in & out stamps from before I was employed), or should I suck up an overstay fine for my remaining 10 days? anyone have any experience of anything similar? thanks :-)

The day your employment ends is he day your permission to stay ends, so that will be next month. (Presuming you are on an extension of stay based on your employement. if you are on a 90 day stamp you got at the border, it remains valid).

Immigration can only give you 7 days to leave the country. If you need more time you must make a border run or get a visa. (What will suit you depends on your nationality and how much time extra you need).

Does the "stamp" originate from a valid visa obtained with the recent past from a Thai Embassy/consulate OR is the "stamp" one obtained from a Thai immigration office ?

In the first instance you are good to stay until July 20 and a 7 day extension can be applied for.

In the second instance the permission to stay ends on the day employment ceases. Again a 7 extension days can be applied for.

IF you have Multiple -entry Visa then whilst the visa is valid you may continue to use it !

Visas and WPs are not linked !

Then your entry status is unaffected by the end of work/cancellation of your work permit.

In fact you should be able to continue to get 90 days entries to Thailand until the 'Use By' date on your multiple entry Non Immigrant Category 'B' Visa.

(Again, please note that this is assuming you actually have a visa issued at a Thai Consular facility outside of Thailand and not an extension of permission to stay/multiple re-entry permit obtained from Immigration inside of Thailand).

Sorry for stressing the above point, but many. many posters confuse extensions of permission to stay with multiple re-entry permits vs. multiple entry non immigrant visas and they are just not the same.
