I'm probably being too cynical, but I somehow think that the officer who was shot must have been related to someone important. Yes you have to do your homework before you shoot somebody. You have to check his family tree.
elgordo38 Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 We all know that no "gambling dens" operate in Thailand without "protection" from the Royal Thai Police (assuming of course that they aren't the ones actually "running" them in the first place). The one that operates a few soi's away from me is "owned" by a senior RTP officer, and he has a lovely house(s), multiple nice cars etc ... I was told he was pulling in 50-100k profit per night, and that excludes what gets pushed higher up the chain. I would guess this is why there are no legal casino's to much competition.

Put 'em in there for kryssaches. dock their pay. Feed em watery rice soup, and find out whether they're guilty as charged. Oh, just remembered. If they're put in a local jail, police buddies of theirs will sneak them out the back door when no one is looking. Ok, nevermind, transfer them.

It would be one of the largest ministries, by numbers, but not as large as the ministries which employ tens of thousands of accountants (mostly young and female) - who accomplish nothing more than crunch billions of numbers which contribute nothing to society or the taxpayers who pay their salaries. Sorry gals, but if ever there was a do-nothing job, yours' is it.

They are transferred to a position where they can only receive their official salary, basically retirement as the major activity of the upper echelons of the RTP is involved in work that greatly increases the official salary for those at the top. Not every local police at your local amphoe owns a bar, gambling den, or brothel. But those who do choose that career path are the ones who have the ability to pay their way up the career ladder. And those who make their way up the ladder and then shake the ladder too much are then tossed off the ladder and become inactive as there are some rules, although those rules can be vague and applied unevenly.

This possibly is because to climb the ladder in this institution you have to buy the desired position with big money, also the reason it is so corrupt.

Wouldn't 'not respecting higher authority enough to properly report the incident' be enough grounds? My guess is they are involved up to their eyeballs in this gambling den and the big brass is pissed they tried to hide something so major as the shooting of an officer. They insulted the brass, big time; maybe they weren't passing along their 'tribute'.

The State Police in Louisiana USA, get transferred every three years; like clockwork. No exceptions.

Must be full of the finest police minds. If they prosecute them, they will go to court and their defense may bring out some information that might incriminate other officers and then the whole 'house of cards' could come tumbling down. It is better (from the police perspective) to put them where they can't involve in direct corruption but are still receiving a paycheck so that they keep quiet.

For example, at a border crossing, it's not unusual to have an officer dealing with your passport, who is glum, mind in a haze, no eye-contact, no words (only a grunt or two). Police in Thailand should be moved every year from one are to another area to avoid them getting involved and over friendly with the local gangsters and having their fingers in to many unsavoury pies. The State Police in Louisiana USA, get transferred every three years; like clockwork. No exceptions. I have often crossed the in and out of Burma at northernmost Thailand. The tiny office on the Burmese side may have the world record for transfer of officers. A farang could go through that checkpoint for 300 days in a row, and every day there would be a different crew in there. They're all personable and friendly, though - a far cry from the officials on the Thai side - mentioned above.

As you say, he's super rich and was 'hand-picked' for the top RTP job by the Generalissimo. He's seen less and less in his RTP uniform because his trusted stock broker gets edgy when he visits his office wearing it. When this photo was taken he'd either been to, or was returning from another 'buy/sell' consultation in the 'city'. I wish he would always wear his suit. Dressed in casual clothes our Somyot is a dead ringer for Hawaiian ace guitarist Kaipo Asing. Kaipo is one heck of a nice guy and an incredible talent, which is where the resemblance ends.
