I like to watch television shows from the UK by downloading from YouTube, Anyone know why recently all you get sometimes is a small 5+5ins square instead of the full screen. The police series 'Inspector George Gentle' is a perfect example of this. Does anyone know if there is any special reason?

What is the point of anyone uploading tv shows which only covers a very small part of your screen?

Not sure, i only can say, i use the 'Internet Download Manager' to download videos from Youtube. With that you're able to choose the quality. 480p, 720p and so on. But basically, even when you would choose the lowest quality, it should be possible to play it in full screen. It looks to me your issue is rather related to the video-player u use. Check the settings for something like aspect ratio, zoom...

Thanks, but can you tell me what you mean by "what video player I use?" I download TV series's from Youtube. It also happens with "The Man from Uncle", yet other series are OK.

I also use 'Internet Download Manager'.

After you downloaded your videos, which program do you use to watch it? I use mainly VLC.

I use Daum Potplayer. If you start downloading, and watch it taking place, you can see it only takes up a little bit of the video. Try downloading 'Inspector George Gentle'.

Possum1913,

Can you point to one or two YouTube videos you're having issues with.

Many YouTubers will re-render a video in pseudo letterboxing (against a static background).

You have to find someone willing to upload who doesn't do this.

Nobody can help you with this strange "small screen" and "frame" around.

Nobody except the uploader!

Read the comments for the video.

I saw similar for downloads from BBC (only half of the screen covered).

The small-sized videos on YouTube (where the programme takes up 25% of the screen) is an attempt by the uploader to circumvent copyright issues.

The theory is this - posting BBC shows (or, for that matter, US TV shows) in full screen might attract the attention of the rights holders (BBC etc). With the small quarter-size screen, the uploader hopes that the Beeb will not be too annoyed (the quality would not be commercial-grade), and that the Beeb will not bother to go after the uploader.

So you have a choice of watching it as is, or look for another uploader who is more brazen.

That sounds like a nice trick to circumvent the presumably automatic (?) detection of copyrighted material.

If you upload a small piece from a private German TV channel the thing will vanish in less than a minute and your account be penalized,

Thanks everyone, it does seem that it's only UK TV shows this is happening with, I just hope it doesn't start to happen all the time.

I also suspect that like everything else, money will have something to do with it.
