Industries voice support to floating minimum wage

BANGKOK: -- The proposed floating of minimum wage reached at a meeting last week hosted by the Ministry of Labour and the Minimum Wage Committee drew criticism from employers with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) planning to raise the issue at the meeting of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) next week.

FTI president Suphan Mongkholsuthee said he agreed that minimum wage should be set in line with inflation at each region, taking into consideration economy of a particular province.

But he disagreed to paying the same minimum wage nationwide, as the country’s economy has yet to fully recover, saying the 300-baht wage introduced by the previous government has affected many industries, particularly textile industry.

He said that the inflation rate has contracted for five consecutive months, indicating that the country’s economy is still recovering.

Given that reason, he said it would be inappropriate to increase the minimum wage right now.

However he said even if minimum wage could be set, it would be impossible to determine what the appropriate minimum wages for all provinces should be.

He added that the issue would be discussed at length with the JSCCIB during the next meeting.

If its abolished,I don't think Thai Industries and businesses would offer

more than 300 THB per day, they would be looking to offer less, most

of the jobs my daughter has applied for, after 4 years at Uni,speaking

reading and writing 3 languages ,in the hospitality industry is a basic

300 THB per day,7 days paid holiday per annum,if off ill, wage is cut.

How anyone can live on 300 Thb per day,is beyond me,take off Social

security payments,costs of getting to work,eating 3 meals a day,does

it leave anything to save up,with the thoughts of one day having a

family and maybe a home of your own, little wonder so many people in

Thailand are up to their eyes in debt.

I am pleased to say,she now has a job at a hotel who realizes that if

you want quality staff ,who can do the job, you have to pay more,as

in the long run it will pay off.

I see a big problem with that for the 12 poorer provinces that the NCPO and TAT have been trying to promote since one year.

Poorer provinces have lower cost of living so salary will most probably be the lowest...

It is already very hard for companies in those provinces to find skill workers.

Setting them up with a lower salary than other more attractive provinces is not going to improve the situation....

Might just increase the exodus to Bangkok...

Young's will go there and only come back to their province when old...

So much for decentralisation

So basically; They want to penalise all the poor people who voted for Thaksin.

The guy in the picture above is positively salivating when making this statement. Government to the rescue again. Come forth Sir Lancelot save the day.

So, what comes first, skilled workers, or the jobs for the skilled workers. Given that there are no trade schools in the countryside, the jobs would seem to have to come first, and it is the companies first job to train the workers how to do the job(s). But for this to work, some trust has to be developed first. The company has to believe that the worker will stay, and the worker has to believe that the company will live up to what they said they would do. Before someone can figure out how to make this work within a Thai context, it is all talk.

What a mob of morons this crowd are, making their millions at the expenses of the poor, , depriving the worker of an already lowly rate , just what the F is a floating minimum wage any way , Prauth - o will sure get plenty of popular votes from the country if this comes to fruition, as stated before how the hell anyone can live in Thailand and raise a family on 300 Bht a day is any one's guess. coffee1.gif

Well he would say that wouldnt he

"inflation rate has contracted for five consecutive "

That didn't stop Prayut from giving civil service employees a 5% pay raise. After all, what's a one-man government without employees?

Of course Thai industries support float the minimum wage; they want to float it in the toilet.

OMG! Industry supports this idea!!!

So if you work in a 7/11 in Buri Ram you will get less pay that if you are in Supanburi, that'll bring happiness back to the people then!
