Dear Pla shado,

Thank you so much for all the time and effort you have put into this. To summarize these photos:

#1 - BUAP LIAM (บวบเหฺลี่ยม)

English name: angled gourd, silk gourd, sponge gourd, angled loofah, Chinese okra, silk squash (all with ridges)

Scientific name: Luffa acutangula

#2 - MAKHUEA PHUANG (มะเขือพวง)

English name: pea eggplant, turkey berry eggplant

Scientific name: Solanum torvum

#3 (LEFT) - PLA KRABOK (ปลากระบอก)

English name: grey mullet

Scientific name: Mugilidae (family)

#3 (RIGHT TOP) - PLA KAO (ปลาเก๋า)

English name: grouper, groper, garoupa

Scientific name: Serranidae (family) - as PLA KAO is the general name for several species of different groupers, which individually have separate scientific names

#3 (RIGHT BOTTOM) - PLA KAPHONG KHAO (ปลากะพงขาว)

English name: white barrumundi, silver perch, white perch, white seabass

Scientific name: Lates calcarifer

#4 - MAKHUEA PRO ( มะเขือเปราะ)

I note that these were also in Lot 5, but the colour seemed to be slighly different, so I decided to reconfirm.

English name; Thai round (ping pong) eggplant (no set English name)

Scientific name: Solanum capsicoides, S. aculeatissimum

#5 - SOM CHENG LEK (ส้มจีนเล็ก)

According to my research, SOM CHENG is a sweet, acidless orange, with a dark screen skin.

I wonder if this information I have is incorrect.

#6 - SCALLOP

I will get back to you on this one.

Again, thanks for the names, scripts and notes on how they are used.

I hope you are in agreement with the above. If you are not, please let me know.

#5 - SOM CHENG LEK (ส้มจีนเล็ก)

According to my research, SOM CHENG is a sweet, acidless orange, with a dark screen skin.

I wonder if this information I have is incorrect.

The oranges in the photo are quite reminiscent of the Mandarin oranges we see during the Chinese New Year celebration we have here in Thailand. There are several sizes available at that time. Not sure if they are the same as the ones in the pix.

Dear Pla shado,

Thank you for that information. I will check it up a bit further.

Also, there was a typo in my post. I meant to say 'dark green skin'.

Dear Pla shado,

#5 - SOM CHIN LEK (ส้มจีนเล็ก)

Sorry, my mistake. When I sent my earlier reply, I accidentally looked up SOM CHENG (ส้มเช้ง) instead of SOM CHIN (ส้มจีน).

You seem to be correct. I looked up SOM CHIN and the photo I saw was very similar to the one I posted. According to my research, SOM CHIN is:

English name: mandarin orange (in this case, small)

Scientific name: Citrus reticulata

Thanks again for your help.

I will try and check up on the scallop tomorrow.

Dear Pla shado and AyG,

I have been trying to check this and consider that the photo should be described as follows, in order to represent this particular shell, rather than scallops in general:

HOI CHEN (หอยเชลล์)

English name: Asian moon scallop

Scientific name: Amusium pleuronectes

- and -

PHAE HOI CHEN (แผ่หอยเชลล์)

English name: radiated scallop

Scientific name: Amusium pleuronectes

I would appreciate any comments you may have.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Pla shado,

That's both interesting and frustrating for beginners of Thai like me.

Sometimes, when I check words like this on sites which have audio, the written form and audio form don't match.
