Irrigation water to be supplied to provinces in July

BANGKOK, 13 June 2015 (NNT) – The government has urged all provinces to prepare areas to receive irrigation during July and requested farmers to slow down their cultivation due to the low water condition, said government’s Deputy Spokesperson.

Regarding the current drought situation, the Prime Minister’s Office Deputy Spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd has said that the government has appointed provincial governors to inform farmers residing in irrigation areas and the Chao Phraya River basin to slow down their cultivation, especially for rice, as the current level of water stored at reservoirs are low.

More rain water is required before supplying more water to the irrigation system. Therefore, farmers should not hasten their cultivation, as plants maybe damaged due to the lack of water. Farmers should also be patient on officials' decision to release more water, as the release of water will affect the entire irrigation system that includes water for consumption.

Under the current plan of the Royal Irrigation Department, irrigation water will be supplied to all irrigation areas within July, says the deputy spokesman.

He has added that the government has launched an income subsidy campaign to farmers affected by the drought under the 1.8 billion baht budget. 37,569 farmers out of the targeted 44,000 have already applied to receive subsidy, while farmers can consult with farmers' center at the subdistrict level and the provincial Damrongdham center for assistance.
