'Thailand's Got Talent' apologises for 'disrespecting spirits'
AFP

BANGKOK: -- The makers of a Thai reality television show have held an apologetic mountaintop prayer ritual after viewers accused them of angering sacred spirits during their last episode.

"Thailand's Got Talent", which is based on the hugely successful British franchise, found itself in hot water after an episode aired Friday.

The opening sequences showed host Na Nuke, a popular comedian, standing on a sacred spot at a northern Thai temple where locals believe the Buddha left a footprint.

In Thai culture feet are the least sacred part of the body and great offence can be caused by standing on something considered holy.

As criticism built Na Nuke and show producers rushed back to the Wat Chalermprakiat on a mountain in Lampang province on Sunday to conduct a prayer ritual apologising for the gaffe.

"It disrespected the sacred spirits. So we needed to go to the sacred spirits to apologise, that was the right thing to do," Amaraporn Sangtong, a spokeswoman for Workpoint Entertainment, which owns the rights to the talent contest told AFP on Tuesday.

Amaraporn said producers were not aware the spot was considered sacred when they shot the footage months ago.

"We wanted to show a Thailand tourist attraction, there were no other bad intentions at all," she said.

Wat Chalermprakiat is made up of a series of stupas and shrines perched precariously on a picturesque mountain ridge.

Although there is no historical evidence the Buddha visited Thailand, locals believe he left a footprint on the mountainside.

Thailand is a deeply superstitious country where Buddhism is blended with Animism and local traditions.

Friday's slip up is not the first time "Thailand's Got Talent" has caused controversy.

In 2012 the show's producers were fined by TV regulators for airing an episode in which a contestant used her breasts to paint a picture.

In Malaysia, meanwhile, four western tourists were held for three days last week for stripping naked on Mount Kinabalu, an act some locals say angered tribal spirits and caused a deadly earthquake.

"Although there is no historical evidence the Buddha visited Thailand, locals believe he left a footprint on the mountainside."

When will some of the religious boneheads in this country finally concede that the Buddha (i.e. Siddharta Gautama) never went abroad, let alone visited what was then, in the 6th century BCE, not even Thailand, but a sparsely populated, densely forested and practically inaccessible backwater. Hence, he could not possibly have left a footprint in the region. So get over it, boneheads, and instead of moaning and complaining, rather spend your time more wisely and go and rub tree barks to see if you can find some lucky lottery numbers!

reality:

the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.

Now I just wonder who would have put that idea in the local people's heads and how much it costs to view the "footprint"?

Let's say I accept that Buddha hopped over to Thailand (nobody noticed him missing) and came down so hard he left a footprint in solid rock. How does standing on a footprint become so offensive?

I was planning (before the big quake) to take the g/f to Buddha's birthplace. Are we allowed to walk where he once walked?

It's as daft as the CEO holding an exorcism to stop his planes skidding off the runway; or enlisting small boats to make the Chao Praya flow faster or asking a Pattaya policeman to stop crime without first offering money .... feel free to add to this list.

your correct, but by the same token, don't you believe people should think before getting all self righteous and slagging off some one else's beliefs....you agree...?

my comments are coming from someone who is an Atheist/Agnostic, or what every title you care to apply to some one who doesn't believe in a benevolent all seeing man in the sky and associated fairy stories

I believe everyone has the right to believe whatever makes them happy. I believe so.

So the people who fought on both sides of the crusades, the jihadists, and the ISL (to name but a very few) are acceptable because their actions, based on their beliefs, made them happy? I guess you really are happy in your belief.

So wait what...did Buddha make the place holy by visiting or did he visit a holy place already, left his footprint and did something offensive and the obvious flew over the head for...centuries?

Getting rid of all religions/superstutions/blabla asap will be a huge step forward for humanity as a whole....wouldn't even care if it's a global genocide by tomorrow, nevermind the mess that will ensue...the remaining people will obviously be smart enough to start acting on the important stuff right away instead of praying for food and what have you that will be short....or rather abundant lol :/

What can I say, I'm a heartless dictator at heart with the best interest for "all" afterall /sigh

I hate to be pedantic, but the star of the Monty Python movie was not Jesus Christ. It was Brian.

Even Brian's mother admitted "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"
