BANGKOK: -- Three ministries have joined hands to improve the cleanliness and safety of toilets on trains and at railway stations throughout the country, particularly in 12 towns.

Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said Wednesday that the Transport, Public Health and Tourism and Sports ministries had cooperated to launch a programme to improve the conditions of toilets on trains and at railway stations up to the HAS standard of the Health Department and the WC OK standard of the Tourism Department.

The toilets must be clean, safe and enough to meet the need of the people, said the transport minister.

So far, 1,447 toilets in 251 railway stations out of a total of 443 stations have passed the Health Department’s standard whereas 52 out of 77 railway stations in “12 must towns” have passed the tests.

The three ministries aim to improve the conditions of toilets on trains and in all railway stations within next year after which the Tourism Authority of Thailand will upload information about the improved toilets in its website so it can be accessible to the public.

“In the future, the conditions of toilets in first and second class trains will be similar to those on planes,” said Minister Prajin.

He went on saying that he had instructed the State Railways of Thailand to do away with fees for the use of toilets at railway stations and at bus terminals within next year.

SRT governor Wutthichart Kalayanamitr said the SRT would acquire 20 additional toilet and shower carriages with 400 million baht budget.

How many times before have we seen these promises rolled out for improved public facilities at train / bus stations? And what is a toilet and shower carriage? I'm with arthurboy... at $600,000 a piece, this may be a nice little earner for someone.

Oversight, inspections, discipline, consequences.... LOL in Thailand? I agree but when would all this happen?

It "boggles my mind" to think the "hub of the World" needs to learn about health and cleanliness.
