Drug gangs' luxury cars put up for auction

BANGKOK: -- ABOUT 100 vehicles seized by state officials in drug cases - including a Lamborghini, a Porsche and Ducati motorbikes - were put up for auction yesterday by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, which hopes to raise at least Bt50 million from selling them.

ONCB secretary-general Permpong Chaowalit said that, in accordance to the Measure for Suppressing Narcotic Offenders Act, the agency had asked the Criminal Court to seize assets worth Bt1.9 billion from 4,315 drug suspects.

He said the agency would speedily impound more drug suspects' assets to destroy drug rings' supplies of money.

People were required to place a Bt100,000 deposit in order to attend the auction.

Starting price for the Lamborghini was set at Bt13.5 million and bidding for the Ducatis started at Bt550,000.

The most popular item was a brand new Porsche, which started at Bt4 million and sold for Bt5.5 million.

An informed source said the auction included assets seized from a network based in central Thailand which had a member who jumped bail after being arrested in possession of 3,600 'yaba' pills and 112 grams of 'ice' in 2012.

The suspect was recaptured earlier this year in possession of 1.7 million 'yaba' pills and 36 kilograms of 'ice'.

The network had assets worth Bt20 million seized, the source said.

Congrats ezzra for posting the first comment !

I don't know if I would like to buy a car that belonged to a member of a drug gang.

Chances are you would be pulled up one day, the car is searched and the cops find a huge stash of drugs hidden in the car.

It is my understanding that in the southern states the police auction off confiscated planes and boats. The drugs dealers buy them back at auction and use again. The cost of doing business.

....aren't these types of auctions usually announced 'well in advance'......as opposed to 'once they have begun already'....

Amazing that you never see these auctions advertised!! By the time you hear about it then its days after its finished.

They are all bought by gang members or friends of the guys they were seized from and then he gets it back!!

yes would of been nice to know when and where the auction was being held as many more people could of attended and the police may have even more revenue.

Just a little bit in a tiny little bag that slipped into the seats could get you into big trouble.......

Does anyone else find it strange that confiscated goods at auction do not pay the 100% import duty? What a great racket that could be....or is. Amybe those 200 high-end cars that disappeared when the junta took power will resurface...slowly of course.thumbsup.gif

A person who earns that kind of money very easily :) For a drug trafficker who earns 100m a month, 13m could be considered peanuts :)

If they really wanted to make money, they should put a notice on TV before the auction, not after. Would have enjoyed it, and maybe purchased something. You know that a Ducati is an impulse item for some of us......

I went to the auction but all I could afford was a bicycle they had there for sale....

I would imagine this sort of auction would be kept secret from the General Public and only Generals would be invited after they carve up who's bidding for what.

What makes you think that the duty wasn't necessarily paid when the cars were originally imported?

They don't care whether ThaiVisa posters know about the auction or not, they still sold the vehicles and every baht that was made is something for nothing into the state's coffers.

They really did make money, even without your participation! The auction must have been advertised somewhere otherwise nobody would have attended, just because you weren't aware of it means nothing.
