Ex-Pheu Thai MPs plead NLA for fair impeachment trial

BANGKOK: -- Over 200 former Pheu Thai MPs gathered in front of the statue of King Rama VII at the parliament house Friday morning to petition the National Legislative Assembly to treat the impeachment case against them in a straightforward manner.

The NLA began the deliberations of the impeachment case against the former elected legislators, including those of the Pheu Thai party, for their role in seeking constitutional amendment over the composition of the Senate.

NLA vice president Peerasak Porchit received the ex-MPs’ petition on behalf of the president.

Mr Samart Kaewmeechai, a key member of the Pheu Thai party, said that the party’s ex-MPs wanted to defend themselves individually before the NLA against the impeachment bid proposed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Former Ubon Ratchathani Somkid Chuakong said said he and his colleagues from the Pheu Thai would fight to the end within the rule of the law and would accept whatever verdict from the NLA.

“Whether we will survive or, we are not serious. Since 65 million people can make, so we can,” said Mr Somkid.

If the MPs are impeached by the NLA, they will be banned from politics for five years.

I wish I had said that.

Over 200... surely this an illegal gathering as they are questioning the fairness of the court system under the military government !!!

Yet 5,6 or7 students who are brave enough to question the regime and its system of "justice" warrant police brutality and arrest.

A sad state of affairs showing the all too often seen double standards in what should (and could) be a wonderful country.

The anti-democratic, unelected, junta-selected NLA which was installed after a military "intervention", will decide whether or not to impeach former elected legislators about their effort to turn a half-appointed, undemocratic body into a fully elected, democratic body....

And then some numbskull from the PTP blathers apologist nonsense about "and would accept whatever verdict from the NLA."

When in fact all the soon-to-be-impeached should just stand up and point out that the NLA has no authority to impeach them.

They have no balls.

I put my faith in the students. They have a 100 times more nerve and 1000 times more wits about them than either the former elected legislators or their current NLA judges...

Could it be that the "numbskull" could be better informed on the subject than you? Note that I didn't say less biased.

You might also note that there are countries without fully elected senates who are rated "more democratic" than the US, and where they don't NEED to elect every public official right down to dog catchers.

This is a complete farce. Certainly, not to the people who might be impeached, but the whole idea that legislaturers can be impeached rather than just saying to them, "no, you can't do this because it's against the constitution", which should be the job of the courts, and then just moving on...it's beyond me.

Why is Thailand so prosecution happy for all their politicians. Why would anyone ever want to be a politician in this country?

You should not post on this forum if you don't know the facts. The MPs are not being impeached just because they want an elected Senate. The Democrats supported this too.

They are being impeached because they tried to sneak in some amendments at the last minute like they did with the Taksin amnesty bill, which caused all the present problems.

They wanted to allow their spouses and children to become senators, they also wanted to extend the term of serving as a Senator and they also wanted to be able to serve multiple terms.

They tried to sneak in these amendments in order to get complete control of the Senate because they did not like them investigating all their corruption and misdeeds.

It does appear to me that you have deliberately tried to mislead other TV members by trying to whitewash the PTP MPs who thoroughly deserved to be impeached because of their actions.

Your post smacks of pro-Taksin propaganda

Do you think that not one of the 300+ politicians involved knew that what they were doing breached constitutional law?

May be they could try "Just following orders" though it didn't work at Munich. They could add "If I didn't follow orders, I wouldn't get paid by my fugitive criminal boss." Perhaps not.

There's a big difference between not knowing the law (which is never an excuse anyway) and what amounts to blatant and highly immoral attempts to change laws.

The speakers should have known (they have highly knowledgeable lawyers sitting with them all the time to advice them) and they should have spoken up -'can't do this'. They didn't and everybody knows why.

On the other side of the coin none of the rank and file pt members ever spoke in parliament (because they are not allowed to) and were happy to just sit there and be 'yes' men and get their monthly salary from abroad plus their local salary as MPs.

Eventually it all collapsed and they need to face the consequences of their blatantly immoral actions.

Absolutely! The very idea that politicians can be held accountable for their actions is appalling,

Agree. Also agree the poster has a long rack record here of misleading and dishonest comments.

so they want fair treatment? just like the way they fairly treated the opposition party by using the riot squad to remove them from parliament so they could vote on the amnesty bill without any opposition?

Don't ban them for 5 years.

Throw them in jail for life!!!
