Changing oil in a Honda GXV 160 mower engine

Featured Replies

Got a generic brand mower with a Honda GXV 160 engine and I want to replace the crap oil the shop put in when new. There is an oil drain plug at the bottom of the filler inlet but innacessable to collect the old oil without it just running all over the deck.. Is it ok to tip the mower on it side (on the oil fill side) and drain the oil out of the fill tube?

That's what I would do, can't hurt the engine. Watch for fuel in the tank leaking out (run it dry first).

Warm it up for a few minutes first to get the oil nice and runny smile.png

Owners manual is here http://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/engines/pdf/manuals/31ZE6030.pdf could be handy.

Thanks Crossy..I know normally your not supposed to tip a 4 stroke on its side as oil can go back through the valves?

Since we're draining the oil it's not going to be an issue, even if a little gets into the pot it will just smoke slightly when you start up.

One thing from the photo that alarms me is the length of the bolt holding the engine to the frame,no quality control at all.

When you drian the oil you could put an extentsion pipe and valve so easier to do next time.
