BANGKOK: -- The 75-yeaqr old Omani man who has been treated with MERS since his arrival in Thailand two weeks ago has been cleared of the virus in his body except in his urine.

Acting public health permanent secretary Dr Surachet Sathitniramai said Sunday that the patient’s condition has improved substantially and he no longer needs respiratory support but he still cannot walk unaided.

Experts led by Dr Prasert Thongcharoen, a virologist, will hold a meeting on Monday to decide whether the Omani man can now be discharged from the quarantine ward of Bamrasnaradoon hospital.

As for the patient’s three relatives, Dr Surachet said their conditions are normal but they have still to be kept in quarantine for 14 days until July 2 under observation like the other 150 people who were suspected to be exposed to MERS.

Dr Sophon Mekthon, director-general of Communicable Diseases Control Department, said that all the people who were exposed to people suspected to contract MERS had-been tracked down, including a taxi driver.

None of them have MERS-related symptoms and doctors are awaiting lab tests to confirm they are cleared of the virus and they will be allowed to return homes, he added.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that extract waste from blood, balance body fluids, form urine, and aid in other important functions of the body. It stands to reason if MERS is detected in the patient's urine I would think it came from his blood. How can the body be cleared of MERS if it is detected in the urine?
