NRC panel to propose granting pardon to non-criminal protesters
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Reform Council will today suggest granting amnesty to protesters who do not face criminal or lese majeste charges, NRC's reconciliation panel chief Anek Laothammathat said yesterday.

The NRC will meet today to discuss the reconciliation plan proposed by his panel before forwarding it to the NRC chairman Thienchay Kiranandana to present to the government.

Granting pardon to protesters is part of the plan, he said, adding that it did not include blanket amnesty or granting pardon to people like former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Under the plan, political rivals will also be invited to work together.

Anek admitted that achieving reconciliation under the ongoing political conflicts might be difficult, but if both sides met each other half way, it can be done.

".......reconciliation under the ongoing political conflicts might be difficult, but if both sides met each other half way, it can be done"

Not going to happen.

Besides, what are 'political conflicts'

This notion means one thing to the anti-democrats and something entirely different to pro-democracy advocates. The latter do not see Political discourse, diversity and debate as conflict. The former do.

The best way at reconciliation are credible elections........It remains the only way of regulating political diversity, along with respect for an electoral majority, and not labeling them as Parliamentary dictators.

But all of that comes down to acceptance of majority rule. A fundamental democratic principle not accepted by many. And who can blame those in the electoral minority for self-servingly thinking that.
