I realize what has been reported. Why would the Mafia on Koh Samui let the Mafia from Koh Tao have any say on what happens on their island?

How do you know they're two different mafia families (do they mind that you call them mafia? most Thai take extreme offense at being called 'mafia'). How do you know the two families are rivals?

It's only a 20 minute boat ride between the two islands. It's not a stretch to envision very concerned mafia members on the smaller island - cruising over to the larger island and making sure there's as little mention as possible of their possible involvement. It's already known Mon was at the trial today.

It's funny, none of the Headman's shielders (I'm not referring to Crab, but to others more right wing than him) have been jumping up and down protesting the word 'mafia' used to describe the KT Headman's clan. I was careful in prior posts to use the term 'mafia-like' when describing them. Can I now be less careful about that? Good thing I don't live near those islands. They might find me and harass me also - because of my outspoken views on how this case has been so thoroughly skewed to protect the H's people.

Mafia comes from the term "Mafiosa", which was a secret criminal organization operating in the 1800's on the Italian Island of Sicily, and in which later moved their criminal activities to the United States.

I am sorry, but even after taking a good hard long look at this Headman, he just doesn't look Italian to me.

In Thailand, the word 'mafia' is well understood. It's a tap sap (a thai word meaning: 'word or phrase taken from another language'). I was once pulled off a moving bicycle by a plainclothes big Chinese looking man at a park in northern Thailand. Right away, I was surrounded by six big plain clothes guys. They tried to grab my arms. I wouldn't let them, and I asked out loud, 'are you mafia?' The biggest guy grinned and said they were special police. I asked to see ID. He flickered a biz card in my face, which I couldn't read. It turns out, there was an ASEAN meeting across town, and these Thai special police were bored and wanted to pick on a farang, so they picked on skinny ol' me. They told me to take them to my house, to get my passport. I said 'sure' and wound up leading the caravan of 3 black SUV's in circles around town. When we figured I was wasting their time, they got pissed off. I demanded to go to the real police station. They grudgingly complied. The big guy wanted to haul me to a back room. I physically resisted and responded to his shouts with shouts of my own. The chief of police was witnessing all this, with a big grin on his face. Later, the special police mafia-wannabes had enough abuse from me, so they split. I can see why they hate farang - we're not as compliant as Thais, and are less likely to kiss-ass to authority. ....some of us, anyway.

Nice story.

I cannot even fathom how the parents must feel seeing the pics of their loved ones in that way. How horrendous.

If these 2 did it (which i doubt) and get off because of police incompetence then the police deserve very insult thrown at them.

Pol Gen Somyot says report of missing DNA tests is a misunderstanding

BANGKOK:— The national police chief has dismissed as a misunderstanding on the part of the defence lawyer and foreign media that the DNA tests of two Myanmar migrant workers charged with the killing of two British tourists on Koh Tao last September have gone missing.

Pol Gen Somyot Pumpunmuang clarified Friday that the DNA tests had been sent to the Forensic Science Institute for examation and then returned to the enquiry officers in charge of the murder case to be incorporated in the case file for court trial.

He said that the claim by the enquiry officers to the court that they did not keep the DNA tests was normal because if the defence lawyer wanted to check the DNA tests, he or she must ask for it through the court.

The national police chief said that the DNA tests were just one piece of evidence out of a host of evidences collected by the police to build up a case against the two Myanmar migrant workers.

The DNA tests included a test of hair specimen of one of the two defendants found in the hand of one of the two victims, Ms Hannah Witheridge.

Ms Witheridge and her boyfriends, David Miller were killed on Koh Tao on last September 15.

Far worse:

if somebody else did it and was not even investigated by the Thai police

- what insult does the Thai police deserve then?

Good to see the top man of the police himself clarifying things so clearly.

Ever one for decisive clear action, as we saw with the ongoing unresolved issue of removing a criminal's police rank. Did he not also hold a press conference to clear up all the misunderstandings regarding spurious accusations concerning the totally innocent son of the local big wig? Even explaining why it wasn't necessary to test the DNA of said son or his relatives, they were already known to be innocent?

It's wonderful that the top man himself is sufficiently aware of all the case detail and can take time from his busy work load to correct all these little misunderstandings himself.

And he even has time to study the investment markets and make some wonderful buys and sells even Buffet would be proud of.

Sleep easy Thailand - knowing the guardians of law and justice are in such safe hands.

The Thai words for lost and finished are completely different. Do any of the Western reporters speak Thai? I wonder what word is used in the official court record. I suspect the testimony given on this issue used a word that is somewhat difficult to interpret as what the witness actually meant. Yet, that is what cross examination is for- to get to the actual fact. The question that should have been asked. Is the DNA sample lost, meaning you cannot find it? Is the DNA sample finished- meaning the sample was completely used up and there is no more? The Thai language has so many words that are difficult to adequately provide an answer- you have to ask the same question sometimes in 5 different ways. The language has nuances that are used to save face at every turn. There is going to be more and more inconsistencies based upon lack of proper answers , proper questioning and proper interpretation. Frustration is already mounting.

Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan is actually a highly respected forensic scientist and is independant. She has worked on numerous cases and has, in the past, turned police cases upside down by showing evidence that the parties were infact innocent. A good step for the case, either way.

Issue remains, where is the British police report?

She lost her credibility with her repeated endorsement of the fake bomb detectors even after they had been proven to be a total fraud.

The British police report is not and cannot be part of this Thai judiclal procedure. Stop holding your breath.

I agree the bomb detectors is a mark against her but it doesn't take away from her forensic skills.

Don't loose sight of how many countrys brought the detectors. This is just one person who got it wrong its dozens of countrys.

http://tribune.com.pk/story/910624/how-a-con-artist-made-80m-by-selling-fake-bomb-detectors-to-the-world/

con artist minted over $80 million by selling fake bomb detectors to law enforcement agencies in different countries around the world including Iraq, Pakistan, China, India, Bangladesh, Lebanon and many more.

They have worked exactly as designed. Not a single illegal golf ball has got through customs since they began being used!

The English words for lost and finished are completely different too. Of course news stations have Thai nationals as translators. They are just squirming as they cant keep track of their lies

Yeah... You could work that up into a novel, and with a catchy title you could probably sell quite a few at the airport.

Filed as Fiction of course. ;-)

Almost no one on the islands that is not speaking for the prosecution or the K. Tao mafiosa,

thinks there is ANY reason to convict these two kids. Thais and expats are on the same page.

Uniformly word is they are patsy's for some serious corrupt psychos.

So let the wheels turn and see if the stitch-up works or not.

So far looks pretty amateur hour

So now we have reports that the hair found in Hannah's hand contains the DNA of one of the accused. All reports of this hair being found stated clearly it was blonde. The 2 accused did not have blonde hair, the cctv is evidence to this. Oh but wait the hair is also now lost so all they have is the record. Or put it another way, all they have is the word of the RTP since we have also now found out that all samples were actually conducted and tested by the RTP forensics and not Singapore.

Also the cigarette butts cannot finish or degenerate, where are they?
